Looks how to spot one

fleece

Huacaya alpacas have a dense, crimped fleece that grows outward from the body, giving them a fluffy, rounded appearance. Their fibre is soft and virtually free of guard hair.54

Personality what they are like

Huacaya alpacas are generally calm, curious and gentle once they trust their handlers. As prey animals they can be shy with fast movements or loud noises. They rarely spit at people unless frightened or abused, and communicate with a soft hum and body language.34

Daily activity how busy a day looks

Moderate. They stay fit through normal herd movement if given enough pasture or paddock space to walk, graze and rest. In hot weather activity should be limited to cooler parts of the day.3

Grooming and care the hands-on bits

Annual shearing is essential to keep them cool in summer. Toenails need trimming as required. Routine veterinary care includes vaccinations, parasite monitoring via faecal testing, and dental checks. They need secure fencing, dry footing, shade and good airflow in warm months.36

Home where they are happiest

Huacaya alpacas need safe fencing, dry areas to lie down, protection from mud, and shade with strong airflow in warm weather. They tolerate cool weather well because of their fleece but are vulnerable to heat stress if not sheared and provided with shade and ventilation. They are livestock and should not be kept as house pets.36

Food basics what goes in the bowl

Forage-based diet: good-quality grass hay or safe pasture makes up most of their intake, roughly 1.5% to 2% of body weight in dry matter daily. Clean water and a camelid-appropriate mineral supplement should always be available.36

Company who they like around

Highly social herd animals. They must live with at least one other alpaca, preferably three or more, to thrive. Keeping a single alpaca is not recommended as they have strong herd instincts and feel safest in numbers.64

The story where it all began

Huacaya alpacas were developed through selective breeding by Andean people over 6,000 years ago, heavily influenced by the wild vicuña. They were domesticated for their fine fibre, meat and hides long before the Inca civilisation. The breed was first imported to the United States from Bolivia, Chile and Peru in the early to mid-1980s. Today Huacayas make up about 95% of all alpacas and are kept worldwide for their fleece and as companion livestock.475

Owner questions the things everyone asks

How often should I feed my Huacaya Alpaca, and what should it eat?

Feed your Huacaya Alpaca daily with good-quality grass hay or safe pasture, aiming for about 1.5% to 2% of its body weight in dry matter. Always provide clean water and a camelid-appropriate mineral supplement. For exact amounts, check the food label and consult your vet.36 Furry Diary plan

Which foods and plants are dangerous for a Huacaya Alpaca?

Avoid feeding your alpaca alcohol, yeast dough, chocolate, caffeine, avocado, citrus, grapes, raisins, onion, garlic, chives, dairy, nuts, coconut, raw meat, raw eggs, bones, xylitol, and salt. Avocado is especially dangerous. Always check with your vet for a full list of toxic plants.8

How much space and land does a Huacaya Alpaca need?

Huacaya alpacas need enough pasture or paddock space to walk, graze, and rest comfortably. They are livestock and should not be kept as house pets. For specific acreage, ask a good breeder or your vet.36

What kind of shelter does a Huacaya Alpaca need?

Provide a dry, well-ventilated shelter with shade and protection from mud. They tolerate cool weather well but need strong airflow in warm months to avoid heat stress. Secure fencing is also essential.36

How do I look after a Huacaya Alpaca's hooves or feet?

Trim your alpaca's toenails as needed, roughly every 60 days according to Furry Diary's starting plan. Keep their living area dry to prevent foot problems. For specific trimming techniques, consult a vet or experienced breeder.36 Furry Diary plan

Does a Huacaya Alpaca need grooming or shearing?

Yes, annual shearing is essential to keep them cool in summer. Their dense fleece grows outward and needs to be removed each year. Regular grooming is not required beyond shearing and occasional toenail trims.36 Furry Diary plan

Can a Huacaya Alpaca live alone?

No, Huacaya alpacas are highly social herd animals and must live with at least one other alpaca, preferably three or more. Keeping a single alpaca is not recommended as they feel safest in numbers.64 Furry Diary plan

How long does a Huacaya Alpaca live?

Huacaya alpacas typically live between 15 and 25 years. With good care, they can enjoy a long, healthy life.23

Is a Huacaya Alpaca good with children?

Huacaya alpacas are generally calm, curious, and gentle once they trust their handlers. However, as prey animals, they can be shy with fast movements or loud noises. Supervise interactions with children and teach gentle handling.34

What regular vet care does a Huacaya Alpaca need?
