Skin

The bumblebee poison frog has smooth, moist skin typical of amphibians. Its body is compact and robust, with a bright yellow or orange base colour overlaid with bold black splotches, stripes, and dots that form a variable reticulated pattern. This aposematic colouration warns predators of its toxicity. Females are often slightly larger and rounder than males.82

Personality what they are like

These frogs are active and curious during the day, often seen exploring their enclosure. They are not aggressive toward humans but are territorial with their own kind, especially mature females. They are not a handling pet; their skin is delicate and they stress easily. They can be kept in pairs or small groups with plenty of hiding spots and visual barriers.76

Daily activity how busy a day looks

Bumblebee poison frogs are diurnal and fairly active for small amphibians. They need a roomy terrarium with plenty of leaf litter, low climbing structures, and live plants to explore. A 15-20 gallon enclosure is recommended for an adult pair, with larger sizes for groups. They do not need walks or handling, but they do need space to move and hunt naturally.76

Grooming and care the hands-on bits

Minimal grooming is needed, but their enclosure requires regular maintenance. The substrate should be coconut husk or similar material that holds humidity. Clean water must be provided, and the enclosure should be misted daily to maintain high humidity. Handling should be avoided; if necessary, use clean, amphibian-safe methods. Their skin is permeable and sensitive to chemicals on human hands.76

Home where they are happiest

These frogs need a tropical vivarium with high humidity (around 80-90%). Daytime temperatures should be 75-80°F (24-27°C), dropping to no less than 70°F (21°C) at night. Prolonged exposure above 84°F (29°C) can be stressful or fatal. Use an all-glass terrarium with a screened lid for ventilation. Provide live plants, driftwood, cork bark, and hiding spots. They are primarily terrestrial but will use vertical space if available.67

Food basics what goes in the bowl

Insectivores that need very small live prey. The staple diet is flightless fruit flies, with Drosophila melanogaster for smaller frogs and Drosophila hydei for larger ones. Springtails, isopods, and pinhead crickets can be offered as variety. Feed juveniles twice daily, adults daily. Dust prey with calcium and vitamin D3, and use a multivitamin as directed.76

Company who they like around

They are semi-communal and can be kept in pairs or small groups if space and hiding spots are adequate. However, they are territorial, and mature females may show aggression. It is best to house them in male-female pairs in smaller enclosures. Provide numerous visual barriers to reduce stress. They are not a handling pet and should be observed rather than touched.67

The story where it all began

The bumblebee poison frog is a wild species native to the tropical rainforests of northern South America, including Venezuela, Brazil, Guyana, and Colombia. It was first described scientifically in the 19th century. In the wild, it is still abundant, but most animals in the pet trade are captive-bred. Its bright colouration and relatively bold nature have made it popular among amphibian keepers. Captive-bred individuals lose their wild toxicity because they no longer eat the toxic ants that produce the skin toxins. They have been kept in terrariums for decades and are considered one of the more approachable dart frog species for beginners with proper setup.621

Owner questions the things everyone asks

How often should I feed my Bumblebee Poison Frog?

Feed juveniles twice daily and adults once daily. Always dust their live prey with calcium and vitamin D3 as directed on the supplement label. For exact amounts, check the food label or ask your vet.76

What does a Bumblebee Poison Frog eat, and what should it never eat?

They eat only small live insects like flightless fruit flies, springtails, and pinhead crickets. Never feed them dead insects, human food, or prey that is too large for them. Always offer live prey to match their natural hunting instincts.76

How much space does a Bumblebee Poison Frog need?

A 15-20 gallon all-glass terrarium is recommended for an adult pair. For groups, provide a larger enclosure with plenty of leaf litter, low climbing structures, and live plants to explore.76

What temperature, light or water does a Bumblebee Poison Frog need?

Keep daytime temperatures between 75-80°F and nighttime above 70°F. Maintain high humidity around 80-90% by misting daily and providing clean water. They are diurnal, so a regular day/night cycle is beneficial, but no special lighting is mentioned in the care guides.67

How often should I clean a Bumblebee Poison Frog's home?

Cleaning frequency varies with the setup. Spot clean daily and do a thorough substrate change every few weeks. For a detailed schedule, ask a vet or an experienced breeder.

Can a Bumblebee Poison Frog live with others?

Yes, they can be kept in pairs or small groups if the enclosure has plenty of hiding spots and visual barriers. However, mature females can be territorial, so a male-female pair is often best. Always watch for aggression and provide enough space.67

How long does a Bumblebee Poison Frog live?

Lifespan varies depending on care and genetics. For typical longevity, consult a vet or a good breeder who specializes in these frogs.

Can I handle a Bumblebee Poison Frog?

Handling is not recommended because their skin is delicate and they stress easily. If you must handle them, use clean, amphibian-safe methods and only when absolutely necessary. It's best to enjoy watching them in their enclosure.76
