At a glance the quick version
Adults typically reach 20 to 30 cm (8 to 12 inches) in length, with some sources citing up to 28 cm.
Looks how to spot one
Smooth, moist skin; fully aquatic with external feathery gills and a finned tail
The golden albino axolotl has a soft, smooth body without scales. It keeps its larval features for life, including three pairs of feathery external gills and a delicate tail fin. The skin is translucent enough to show a golden sheen, and the eyes are pink or red due to albinism.12
Personality what they are like
Golden albino axolotls are generally peaceful, quiet and bottom-dwelling. They spend much of their time resting on the substrate and may flick their tails when startled. They are not aggressive but may nip at tank mates if kept with smaller individuals. They rely on smell and lateral line senses rather than eyesight, and they are often more active in dim light.13
Daily activity how busy a day looks
Golden albino axolotls are not very active. They prefer to rest on the bottom and explore by walking along the substrate. They need a large aquarium (minimum 80 to 100 cm in length) with gentle filtration and plenty of hiding spots. They are sensitive to bright light and strong water flow, so provide shaded areas and use a spray bar. They are not social animals and should be kept alone or with similarly sized axolotls only.16
Grooming and care the hands-on bits
Golden albino axolotls are fully aquatic and require a cycled aquarium with clean, cool water. Use a bare bottom or fine sand substrate; never use gravel as it can be swallowed and cause fatal impaction. Perform large weekly water changes and siphon waste. Keep water temperature strictly below 20°C (ideally 15 to 18°C) and avoid temperatures above 21°C. Provide dim lighting and hiding places such as caves or PVC pipes. They are sensitive to ammonia and nitrite, so test water regularly.163
Home where they are happiest
Golden albino axolotls need a large, fully aquatic aquarium with a minimum length of 80 to 100 cm for a single adult. Use a gentle filter with low water flow, such as a spray bar. Keep the water cool, ideally between 15°C and 18°C, and never above 21°C. Provide fine sand or a bare bottom, and add caves, PVC pipes, or terracotta pots for hiding. Avoid strong lighting and provide floating plants for shade. They are sensitive to water quality, so maintain excellent filtration and perform regular water changes.163
Food basics what goes in the bowl
Golden albino axolotls are carnivorous. Feed a staple of high-quality sinking carnivore pellets or specialised axolotl pellets, supplemented with earthworms, blackworms, bloodworms, and other soft-bodied invertebrates. Juveniles should be fed daily, while adults can be fed every two to three days. Remove uneaten food promptly to maintain water quality. Do not feed mammalian or avian meat such as beef heart, as they cannot digest it properly.13
Company who they like around
Golden albino axolotls are not social and should be kept alone or only with similarly sized axolotls. Larger individuals may bite the gills or limbs of smaller ones. Do not house them with fish that graze on their skin, such as plecostomus. They are sensitive to bright light and prefer dim, shaded environments. They are not aggressive but may nip at tank mates if kept with smaller individuals.13
The story where it all began
The golden albino axolotl is a colour morph of the axolotl (Ambystoma mexicanum), a neotenic salamander that retains its larval features throughout life. Unlike the wild-type mottled brown-grey axolotl, the golden albino lacks melanin and instead expresses golden-yellow skin with pink or red eyes. This morph is the result of selective breeding in captivity and is not found in the wild. The wild axolotl is critically endangered, with only a small population remaining in the canals of Lake Xochimilco in Mexico. All pet golden albino axolotls are captive-bred.421

How much space does a Golden Albino Axolotl need?
A single adult needs a large aquarium with a minimum length of 80 to 100 cm. Provide gentle filtration and plenty of hiding spots.163
What temperature, light or water does a Golden Albino Axolotl need?

Can a Golden Albino Axolotl live with others?
They are not social and should be kept alone or only with similarly sized axolotls. Larger individuals may bite smaller ones, and avoid fish that graze on their skin.13
How long does a Golden Albino Axolotl live?
Their lifespan varies depending on care and environment. For specific information, consult a good breeder or an exotic-pet vet.
