Looks how to spot one

smooth, moist skin with external gills and a tail fin

The wild type axolotl has a flattened head, a wide mouth, and three pairs of feathery external gills on each side of the head. Its body is soft and smooth, with a fin that runs along the back and tail. It retains its larval features throughout life, a condition called neoteny.1

Personality what they are like

Wild type axolotls are quiet, sedentary bottom-dwellers. They are generally peaceful but will eat anything that fits in their mouth. They are not social and do not need company. Juveniles may nip at each other, so adults of similar size can be kept together with caution, but a species-only tank is recommended.12

Daily activity how busy a day looks

Low. Axolotls are cathemeral and may be active at any time, but they prefer dim light. They spend most of their time resting on the substrate or hovering, with occasional bursts of swimming. They do not need exercise beyond their normal movement.13

Grooming and care the hands-on bits

Axolotls should never be handled outside water because their skin and slime coat are very fragile. If you must move one, use a soft fine-mesh net or coax it into a submerged container. Keep the aquarium clean with weekly water changes and siphon waste. Use a water dechlorinator and avoid heavy metals in tap water.1

Home where they are happiest

Strictly aquatic. Minimum 29-gallon (110-litre) tank for one adult, with a length of 80-100 cm. Use fine sand or bare bottom, never small gravel. Keep water temperature strictly below 20°C, ideally 15-18°C; temperatures above 24°C cause severe stress and fungal infections. Use a chiller in warm climates. Provide dim lighting and hiding spots like caves, PVC pipes, and floating plants. Use gentle filtration with low water flow.12

Food basics what goes in the bowl

Carnivorous. Staple foods include live earthworms, blackworms, and high-quality sinking salmon or axolotl pellets. Offer frozen or cooked shrimp as treats. Never feed mammalian or avian meat (like beef heart) because axolotls cannot digest it properly. Remove uneaten food promptly.12

Company who they like around

Solitary. Axolotls do not need companionship and are best kept alone. If housing multiple, ensure they are the same size to prevent nipping. Separate males from females unless breeding, as males will relentlessly pursue females. Do not house with fish, especially sucker-mouth species like Plecostomus, which can graze on the axolotl's skin.12

The story where it all began

The wild type axolotl is the original colour form of Ambystoma mexicanum, found naturally in the high-altitude lakes of the Valley of Mexico. Its dark olive-green or mottled brown body with golden speckles provided camouflage in the murky lake bottoms. Unlike other axolotl colour morphs (such as leucistic or golden albino), the wild type carries the natural pigmentation that evolved in the wild. All axolotl morphs have the same care needs; only the appearance differs.145

Owner questions the things everyone asks

How often should I feed my Wild Type Axolotl?

Feeding frequency depends on your axolotl's age and size, so it's best to ask a vet or experienced breeder for a schedule. Generally, adults may be fed every 2-3 days, but always remove uneaten food promptly.

What does a Wild Type Axolotl eat, and what should it never eat?

Your axolotl is carnivorous and thrives on live earthworms, blackworms, and high-quality sinking salmon or axolotl pellets. Never feed mammalian or avian meat like beef heart, as they cannot digest it properly.12

How much space does a Wild Type Axolotl need?

A single adult needs a minimum 29-gallon (110-litre) tank with a length of 80-100 cm. Use fine sand or a bare bottom, and never small gravel.12

What temperature, light or water does a Wild Type Axolotl need?

Keep water temperature strictly below 20°C, ideally 15-18°C, and never above 24°C. Provide dim lighting, hiding spots, and gentle filtration with low water flow. Use a dechlorinator and avoid heavy metals in tap water.12

How often should I clean a Wild Type Axolotl's home?

Clean the aquarium with weekly water changes and siphon waste from the bottom. This keeps the water quality high and your axolotl healthy.1

Can a Wild Type Axolotl live with others?

Axolotls are solitary and best kept alone, but adults of similar size can be housed with caution. Never keep them with fish, especially sucker-mouth species, and separate males from females unless breeding.12

How long does a Wild Type Axolotl live?

Lifespan varies, so ask your vet or a good breeder for a typical range. With proper care, they can live many years.

Can I handle a Wild Type Axolotl?

Never handle your axolotl outside water, as their skin and slime coat are very fragile. If you must move one, use a soft fine-mesh net or coax it into a submerged container.1
