Looks how to spot one

Feathers

The Barnevelder has a heavy, soft-feathered body typical of a utility breed. The most famous variety is the double-laced, where each feather is edged with a sharp black band, creating a striking pattern. The comb is single and upright, and the legs are clean (featherless) and yellow.17

Personality what they are like

Barnevelders are known for their placid, gentle and friendly nature. They are curious and will often greet their owners, but they are not noisy birds. They are lower in the pecking order, so they can be bullied by more assertive breeds. They are docile and tolerate handling well, making them a wonderful choice for families.562

Daily activity how busy a day looks

They are not great fliers and are relatively calm, but they love to forage and scratch. They need space to roam and explore; if kept confined they can become inactive and overweight. A large run or free-range area is ideal.46

Grooming and care the hands-on bits

Routine chicken care applies: keep the coop clean, change bedding regularly, and provide dust-bathing areas to help control parasites. Regular health checks for signs of illness or parasites are recommended.2

Home where they are happiest

A secure, well-ventilated coop with at least 4 square feet per bird inside, plus a covered run or free-range area. They are cold hardy but need shade and cool water in hot weather. Provide perches and nest boxes.23

Food basics what goes in the bowl

Feed a high-quality poultry feed, with layer feed during peak laying. Supplement with grains, vegetables and occasional treats. Fresh water must always be available.25

Company who they like around

They are social birds and should not be kept alone. They get on well with other docile chicken breeds but are often lower in the pecking order, so ensure enough space to avoid stress. They are gentle with children and enjoy human company if handled from a young age.52

The story where it all began

The Barnevelder was developed in the Netherlands, in the area around the town of Barneveld. In the late 1800s, local farm chickens were crossed with large Asian 'Shanghai' birds (ancestors of breeds like the Brahma and Cochin) to create a good layer of brown eggs. The breed was first shown in 1911 and officially recognised in the Netherlands in 1923. It was exported to Britain around 1921 because of the demand for brown eggs. The double-laced variety became the most popular and is the classic image of the breed today.17
