Looks how to spot one

Glossy feathers with bare facial skin

A large, broad duck with a long flat tail and strong clawed feet for gripping branches. Both sexes have bare red skin with knobbly caruncles around the eyes and bill, and drakes are much bigger, with a short crest they can raise. Length figures (71-84 cm) refer to wild birds.135

Personality what they are like

Calm, placid and slow-moving, with individual personalities; many will take food from the hand and wag their tails when pleased. They prefer not to be picked up, and ducks are the easier pets while drakes are best kept with plenty of room. Instead of quacking, drakes give a soft hiss and ducks a quiet trill or short squeak.541

Daily activity how busy a day looks

Females and lighter birds fly well and like to perch and roost up high, so wing-clipping or a covered run is common; heavy drakes mostly stay on the ground. They snap up flying insects around the yard.546

Grooming and care the hands-on bits

Muscovies swim less than other ducks because their oil glands are smaller, so a bathing tub is enough rather than a pond. Supply clean drinking water deep enough to dip the head, and shallow troughs for ducklings.3457

Home where they are happiest

A secure, predator-proof night shelter with around 0.4-0.55 m2 (4-6 sq ft) per bird, plus a fenced or covered run. Roosting perches suit their tree-perching habit. They cope well with cold down to about -12 C.7541

Food basics what goes in the bowl

A good-quality duck or waterfowl feed as the base, with greens, grass clippings and vegetables as extras, plus the insects they catch themselves. Keep avocado, chocolate, onion, garlic and mouldy food away from them.57

Company who they like around

Social birds best kept in a small group, ideally with more ducks than drakes.75

The story where it all began

The Muscovy is a separate species from the mallard and was domesticated in the Americas by Native American peoples long before Europeans arrived. Traders carried it to Europe from the 1500s, and today it is kept worldwide for meat, eggs and as a gentle, quiet pet.124

Fun facts for the dinner table

  1. 1

It is the only domestic duck that does not descend from the mallard.3

  2. 2

Despite the name, it has nothing to do with Moscow; the name may come from its musky scent or from the Muscovy Company that traded the birds.5

  3. 3

Muscovy eggs take about 35 days to hatch, a week longer than mallard-type ducks.3

  4. 4

Drakes do not quack; they communicate with a low hiss.4

  5. 5

Unlike most domestic ducks, Muscovies like to perch and roost in trees.4

Treats they will love homemade and simple

Donkey Safe Veggie & Fruit Treat Mix

A low-sugar, high-fibre mix of safe vegetables and fruit that encourages natural foraging and can tempt fussy or unwell donkeys.

You need

  • 1 small carrot, chopped into small pieces (not rounds) or grated
  • 1 small apple, cored and chopped into small pieces or grated (not dried or cooking apples)
  • 1 small parsnip, chopped into small pieces
  • 1 small banana (including skin), sliced into rounds
  • 1-2 fresh mint leaves (optional, for extra temptation)

How

  1. Wash all vegetables and fruit thoroughly.
  2. Core the apple and chop all ingredients into small, manageable pieces (not round slices to avoid choking).
  3. Mix together in a clean bowl.
  4. Offer a maximum of one small handful-sized portion per donkey per day.
  5. Introduce gradually and monitor for any digestive upset.

How much: One small handful-sized portion per donkey per day maximum.

Owner questions the things everyone asks

How often should I feed my Muscovy Duck?

Feed your Muscovy Duck daily, providing fresh food and water each day. Furry Diary's starting plan suggests refreshing food and water every day. Always follow the food label and check with your vet for exact amounts.81 Furry Diary plan

What does a Muscovy Duck eat, and what should it never eat?

Muscovy Ducks eat a balanced poultry feed, greens, vegetables, and occasional protein like mealworms. Never give them avocado, chocolate, caffeine, grapes, raisins, onion, garlic, or salty foods, as these are toxic. Always provide fresh water.819

How much space does a Muscovy Duck need?

They need space to roam, graze, and dabble, with access to a pond or shallow water. A secure outdoor area with room to forage and perch is ideal. Exact space varies, so ask a good breeder or vet for guidance.810

What shelter or housing does a Muscovy Duck need?

Provide a secure enclosure with shelter from extreme weather and predators, plus access to water for dabbling. They enjoy perching in trees or on roosts, and nest boxes for breeding. Check local laws before keeping them.81011

How often should I clean a Muscovy Duck's home?

Furry Diary's plan suggests a spot clean daily and a full clean every 30 days. Also check for mites every two weeks. Keep their water and food area fresh daily to maintain hygiene. Furry Diary plan

Can a Muscovy Duck live with others?

Yes, they are social and do best in small flocks with a balanced male-to-female ratio. They are generally peaceful with other ducks and poultry, but dominant males may defend territories. Check local regulations, as they can be invasive in some areas.810

How long does a Muscovy Duck live?

Muscovy Ducks typically live 7 to 8 years. With good care, they can enjoy a full lifespan. Ask your vet for tips on keeping them healthy.8

Can I handle a Muscovy Duck?

Domestic Muscovy Ducks are generally calm and friendly, making them good pets. They can be handled gently, but broody females may be protective, and occasional drakes might challenge you. Always approach calmly and respect their space.121310
