Looks how to spot one

scales

A small, armoured catfish with a flattened body and a broad head. The mouth is a sucker on the underside. Adult males develop fleshy tentacle-like bristles on the snout and head, while females have only a few small bristles around the snout.167

Colourspale yellowcream-whitepinkish62

Personality what they are like

Peaceful and shy, these fish are nocturnal bottom-dwellers that spend the day hiding in caves or under driftwood. They are calm with most tankmates, but adult males can become territorial toward other males of the same species, especially when defending a spawning cave.182

Daily activity how busy a day looks

Low to moderate. They are mostly inactive during the day and become more active at dusk and night, grazing on surfaces. Provide plenty of hiding spots and driftwood for them to feel secure.85

Grooming and care the hands-on bits

Easy to moderate. Weekly water changes of 25% are recommended, along with stable water parameters. Keep nitrate levels below 40 ppm. A sand or fine gravel substrate is best to protect their sensitive undersides. Driftwood is essential for their digestive health.257

Home where they are happiest

Minimum tank size 20 gallons (75-100 litres) for a single adult. Water temperature 21-30°C, pH 5.5-7.5, hardness 1-15 dGH. Provide caves, driftwood, rocks, and live plants. Good filtration and well-oxygenated water are important. They are sensitive to poor water quality.145

Food basics what goes in the bowl

Primarily herbivorous. Feed high-quality algae wafers, sinking pellets, and blanched vegetables such as zucchini, cucumber, and spinach. Driftwood is essential for fibre. Offer protein treats like frozen bloodworms or brine shrimp once or twice a week at most.823

Company who they like around

Very peaceful with other community fish such as tetras, rasboras, and corydoras. Males can be territorial toward other bristlenose plecos, especially in smaller tanks. If keeping more than one, provide ample space and multiple hiding caves. Best kept singly or as a compatible pair in a larger tank.145

The story where it all began

The Albino Bristlenose Pleco is a selectively bred colour variety of the common Bristlenose Catfish (Ancistrus sp.). Through generations of captive breeding, individuals carrying the albino gene were paired to produce fish that lack melanin pigment, resulting in a pale yellow or cream-white body with pink or red eyes. This colour morph does not occur naturally in the wild; it was developed entirely in the aquarium trade. In all other respects, the albino form is identical to the standard brown-grey bristlenose, sharing the same size, diet, behaviour, and care requirements.642
