Scales and fins

The Delta Tail Betta is a long-finned variety of Betta splendens. Its most distinctive feature is the tail fin, which opens into a broad, triangular shape that is wider than a veiltail but not as fully spread as a halfmoon. The caudal fin edges are straight, extending outward from the body. The body is typically compact and streamlined, with flowing fins that can be delicate.53

Personality what they are like

Delta Tail Bettas are semi-aggressive and territorial, especially males. They are curious, food-motivated, and often interactive with their owners, learning feeding routines and approaching the front of the tank. Males must be housed alone; females may sometimes be kept in sororities with careful planning. They will flare and display at other males or fish with similar shapes and colours.431

Daily activity how busy a day looks

Delta Tail Bettas are active swimmers that patrol the upper water column. They need space to explore and flare, but strong currents should be avoided as their long fins can make swimming difficult. Enrichment includes live or silk plants, caves, floating cover, and broad leaves near the surface for resting. Brief, supervised mirror sessions can provide stimulation but should be limited to avoid stress.34

Grooming and care the hands-on bits

Care is similar to other domestic bettas. A heated, filtered aquarium of at least 5 gallons (20 litres) is recommended, with 10 gallons being ideal. Water temperature should be 24-28°C, pH 6.0-7.5, and hardness 3-12 dGH. Gentle filtration is important to avoid strong currents. Regular water changes and stable water quality are essential to prevent fin damage and stress. Décor should be smooth-edged to protect delicate fins.312

Home where they are happiest

Delta Tail Bettas need a calm, warm, clean aquarium with plenty of vegetation. In the wild, their ancestors live in shallow, slow-moving waters like rice paddies and ponds. Provide live or silk plants, floating plants, and hiding spots. A minimum tank size of 5 gallons (20 litres) is recommended, with 10 gallons preferred. Strong currents should be avoided. They are not known to be venomous or illegal to keep, but males are aggressive and must not be housed together.321

Food basics what goes in the bowl

Delta Tail Bettas are carnivorous (insectivorous). Their diet should be high in protein, with quality betta pellets as a staple, supplemented with frozen or live foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, daphnia, and mosquito larvae. Feed small portions once daily, only what they can consume in 2-3 minutes. Avoid overfeeding to prevent bloating and obesity.431

Company who they like around

Males are solitary and must be housed alone due to high aggression towards other males and similar-looking fish. Females can sometimes be kept in groups (sororities) with ample space and careful planning. They may also coexist with peaceful community fish of compatible size and temperament, but caution is needed as they are territorial. They are interactive with humans and can learn feeding routines.431

The story where it all began

The Delta Tail is a selectively bred variety of Betta splendens, developed over nearly 100 years of domestication. Wild bettas from Southeast Asia were originally bred in Thailand for fighting, with males selected for aggression. Over time, ornamental breeding shifted focus to colour and fin shape, leading to the Delta Tail and other long-finned varieties. The Delta Tail is characterised by its broad, triangular tail that is wider than a veiltail but less dramatic than a halfmoon. It is a form trait, not a separate species, so its care is the same as other domestic bettas.653

Recognised by the official bits

International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN)
Wild Betta splendens listed as Vulnerable; domestic variants not separately assessed.1

Owner questions the things everyone asks

How often should I feed my Delta Tail Betta?

Feed your Delta Tail Betta once daily, only what they can eat in 2-3 minutes. Overfeeding can cause bloating and obesity, so stick to small portions. Furry Diary's starting plan suggests feeding every day.431 Furry Diary plan

What does a Delta Tail Betta eat, and what should it never eat?

They are carnivorous and need a high-protein diet with quality betta pellets as a staple, plus frozen or live foods like bloodworms and brine shrimp. Never feed them plant-based foods or anything not meant for carnivorous fish.431

How much space does a Delta Tail Betta need?

A minimum of 5 gallons (20 litres) is recommended, with 10 gallons being ideal for more swimming room. They are active swimmers that patrol the upper water column, so space is important.312

What temperature, light or water does a Delta Tail Betta need?

Keep water temperature between 24-28°C, pH 6.0-7.5, and hardness 3-12 dGH. Use gentle filtration to avoid strong currents, and provide calm, warm water with plenty of plants and hiding spots.312

How often should I clean a Delta Tail Betta's home?

Furry Diary's starting plan suggests a 25% water change every week, along with weekly water testing. Rinse the filter gently once a month to keep the environment stable and healthy. Furry Diary plan

Can a Delta Tail Betta live with others?

Males are solitary and must be housed alone due to aggression. Females may sometimes be kept in groups with careful planning, but always monitor for territorial behavior.431

How long does a Delta Tail Betta live?

With proper care, they typically live 3 to 5 years. Good water quality and diet help them reach their full lifespan.31

Can I handle a Delta Tail Betta?

Handling is not recommended as their delicate fins and scales can be easily damaged. They are best enjoyed through observation and interaction at the tank front.35
