Looks how to spot one

scales

The body is silvery-blue to greenish-blue with iridescent scales that shimmer under aquarium lighting. A dark spot sits on the mid-body, and faint vertical bars may appear when the fish is stressed or displaying. The fins have a subtle blue-green iridescence, and the dorsal and caudal fins may show red or orange highlights that complement the head coloration.1

Personality what they are like

A peaceful cichlid that does well in community tanks with medium to large peaceful fish. It is slightly territorial but generally calm, especially when kept in a group. Males may show more intense colour and dominance during breeding.13

Daily activity how busy a day looks

Moderate activity. They spend much of their time sifting through sand at the bottom, with gentle mid-water swimming between bouts. Provide a fine sand substrate to allow natural foraging behaviour.41

Grooming and care the hands-on bits

Care level is moderate. Requires excellent water quality with regular partial water changes. A fine sand substrate is essential for their well-being as they sift through it constantly. Provide hiding places with driftwood, rock structures, or sturdy plants.12

Home where they are happiest

Minimum tank size 55 gallons (208 litres). Water temperature 78-86°F (26-30°C), pH 5.5-7.5, hardness 2-12 dGH. Subdued lighting is preferred. A fine sand substrate is mandatory for their sand-sifting behaviour. Provide driftwood, rocks, and sturdy plants for shelter.125

Food basics what goes in the bowl

Omnivore with a preference for vegetable matter. Offer a variety of high quality flake foods, sinking cichlid pellets, frozen foods such as bloodworms and brine shrimp (including spirulina-enriched), and occasional live blackworms. Multiple small feedings throughout the day mimic their natural browsing behaviour.132

Company who they like around

Social fish that should be kept in groups of 5 to 8 individuals. A group helps establish a natural hierarchy and reduces stress on weaker individuals. They are peaceful with other medium to large peaceful fish but may be territorial during breeding.13

The story where it all began

The Red Head Tapajos was first collected by German aquarists in the early 1990s from the Rio Tapajós drainage in Brazil. For many years it was known in the hobby under the placeholder name Geophagus sp. 'Red Head Tapajos' because it lacked a formal scientific description. It wasn't until 2022 that the species was formally described as Geophagus pyrocephalus by Deprá and colleagues. The species name pyrocephalus means 'fire head' in Greek, perfectly capturing the vivid red-orange head colouration that defines this fish. It quickly became popular in the aquarium trade and is now regularly aquacultured.16
