Personality what they are like

Peaceful, active and outgoing. They are bold and often greet their keeper at feeding time. Males may show mild boisterousness but serious aggression is rare. They do well in community tanks with other peaceful fish.41

Daily activity how busy a day looks

Moderate. They enjoy open swimming areas and will graze on algae throughout the day. A tank of at least 80 litres (about 20 gallons) is recommended for a small group.3

Grooming and care the hands-on bits

Very low maintenance. They help control algae by grazing. No special grooming needed, but regular water changes and stable water parameters are essential.41

Home where they are happiest

Requires very hard, alkaline water (GH 12-30, KH 5-20, pH 7.0-8.5) and a temperature of 24-28°C (75-82°F). Adding marine salt (1 tablespoon per 5 gallons) is highly beneficial. A planted tank with gravel substrate and open swimming areas is ideal. They are not suitable for soft, acidic water.436

Food basics what goes in the bowl

Omnivorous with a strong preference for vegetable matter. Feed high-quality spirulina flakes, algae wafers, and blanched vegetables (zucchini, spinach). Supplement occasionally with live or frozen foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp and daphnia.413

Company who they like around

Peaceful and social. Best kept in groups with at least 3 females per male to reduce harassment. They can be kept with other peaceful community fish. Do not house different molly species together to prevent hybridisation.13

The story where it all began

The Gold Dust Molly is a selectively bred colour variety of the common molly (Poecilia sphenops). It was developed in the aquarium trade, with fancy molly varieties first appearing in the 1920s. The variety is prized for its striking gold and black body with fine gold speckles, which looks like gold dust. Like all mollies, it is a livebearer and very easy to breed.13
