Looks how to spot one

Fish

The plakat betta has a short, rounded tail and compact fins, unlike the long flowing fins of many ornamental bettas. This gives it a more streamlined, athletic appearance, closer to the wild form. Colours vary widely, from deep reds and blues to silver bases with contrasting fin hues.32

Personality what they are like

Plakat bettas are aggressive, especially males towards each other, and can fight to the death. They are more active and lively than long-finned bettas, exploring their tank and interacting with their environment. They may also show aggression towards females outside breeding and can nip slow-moving tank mates.43

Daily activity how busy a day looks

Plakat bettas are active swimmers that enjoy exploring planted tanks. They need plenty of space to move and lots of plant life for stimulation. A tight-fitting lid is essential as they are good jumpers.35

Grooming and care the hands-on bits

Regular water changes and maintaining stable water parameters are important. Their short fins are less prone to tearing, but good water quality is still vital. Provide a heater to keep water warm, as cold water can cause lethargy and illness.52

Home where they are happiest

A minimum tank size of 7 to 10 gallons is recommended, with a temperature range of 72 to 82°F (22 to 28°C) and a pH of 6.0 to 7.5. They prefer shallow, slow-moving freshwater areas with plants, mimicking their natural rice paddy and marsh habitats. A lid is necessary to prevent jumping.325

Food basics what goes in the bowl

Plakat bettas are carnivores. Feed high-quality betta pellets as a staple, supplemented with frozen or live foods like bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia. Feed small portions once daily, only what they can consume in 2 to 3 minutes, and avoid plant-based foods.42

Company who they like around

Plakat bettas are solitary and aggressive. Never house two males together as they will fight to the death. Males may also be aggressive towards females outside breeding. They can be kept with peaceful, fast-moving tank mates, but caution is needed. Betta fighting is illegal in many countries, so keep them as pets, not for combat.45

The story where it all began

The plakat betta is the traditional short-finned form of Betta splendens, originating from Thailand and neighbouring countries. It was kept and bred for fighting contests for centuries, with records suggesting domestication at least 1,000 years ago. The name 'plakat' comes from the Thai words 'pla kat', meaning 'biting fish'. Unlike the long-finned ornamental varieties, the plakat retains a short tail and body shape closer to the wild fish, though modern show plakats have been bred for more elaborate finnage and colours. This variety is the closest domestic form to the wild Betta splendens, which is plainer in appearance.316

Owner questions the things everyone asks

How often should I feed my Plakat Betta?

Feed your Plakat Betta once daily, only as much as it can eat in 2 to 3 minutes. Furry Diary's starting plan suggests daily feeding to keep your fish healthy. Overfeeding can harm water quality, so stick to small portions.42 Furry Diary plan

What does a Plakat Betta eat, and what should it never eat?

Your Plakat Betta is a carnivore, so offer high-quality betta pellets as a staple and treat with frozen or live foods like bloodworms or brine shrimp. Never feed plant-based foods as they cannot digest them properly.42

How much space does a Plakat Betta need?

A Plakat Betta needs a minimum tank size of 7 to 10 gallons to swim and explore. They are active fish, so more space is always better, and a tight-fitting lid is essential to prevent jumping.325

What temperature, light or water does a Plakat Betta need?

Keep the water temperature between 72 and 82°F with a heater, and maintain a pH of 6.0 to 7.5. They prefer shallow, slow-moving water with plenty of plants, and a lid is necessary as they are good jumpers.325

How often should I clean a Plakat Betta's home?

Furry Diary's starting plan recommends a 25% water change every week, along with weekly water testing. Rinse the filter once a month to keep the environment stable and your betta thriving.52 Furry Diary plan

Can a Plakat Betta live with others?

Plakat Bettas are solitary and aggressive, especially males towards each other. Never keep two males together, and use caution with any tank mates; peaceful, fast-moving fish may work, but it's often safest to keep them alone.45

How long does a Plakat Betta live?

With proper care, your Plakat Betta can live 3 to 5 years. Good water quality and a balanced diet help them reach their full lifespan.42

Can I handle a Plakat Betta?

Handling a Plakat Betta is not recommended as it can stress the fish and damage its protective slime coat. If you need to move it, use a soft net and ask a vet or experienced breeder for guidance.
