Rosetail Betta
Betta splendens
Also called Rose Tail Betta, Feathertail Betta, Ruffled Betta
From Selectively bred in captivity by the Chenmaswil team (Rajiv Masillamoni, Laurent Chenot, Jeff Wilson) in the late 1980s and early 1990s. The wild ancestor Betta splendens originates from the Mekong basin in Thailand, Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam.1234

At a glance the quick version
Body length excluding tail; total length including fins can reach 10-12 cm in well-developed males.
Looks how to spot one
scales and fins
The rosetail betta has a compact, laterally compressed body typical of Betta splendens, but its unpaired fins (especially the caudal fin) show excessive branching that creates a ruffled, rose-like edge. This heavy finnage gives the fish a dramatic, layered appearance but also adds drag and can impair swimming. The body is usually paler than that of a standard halfmoon betta from the same spawn, and extreme forms may have smaller ventrals, a smaller dorsal, and asymmetric scaling.356
Personality what they are like
Rosetail bettas share the typical betta temperament: they are curious, interactive and often territorial. Males are aggressive towards other males and must be housed alone. The heavy fins make them less agile than shorter-finned bettas, so they tire more easily and benefit from gentle water flow and plenty of resting spots near the surface.465
Daily activity how busy a day looks
Moderate activity. They need daily opportunities to swim, explore and rest. Provide open swimming lanes, gentle filtration, broad-leaf plants or betta hammocks near the surface, and hiding spots without sharp edges. Strong currents should be avoided as they make swimming difficult for these heavy-finned fish.6
Grooming and care the hands-on bits
Rosetail bettas require more care than standard bettas because their heavy, ruffled fins are prone to tearing and infection. Keep the tank clean with regular water changes, use gentle filtration, and provide smooth decor. Monitor fin condition closely and treat any signs of fin rot promptly.65
Home where they are happiest
A minimum of 5 gallons (19 litres) is recommended, with 10 gallons (38 litres) being easier to keep stable. Water temperature should be 24-30°C (76-82°F), pH 6-8, hardness 1-15 dGH. They need a filter, a heater, and regular access to the surface to breathe (they are labyrinth fish). Provide soft plants, smooth decor and resting spots near the surface. Strong current must be avoided.465
Food basics what goes in the bowl
Carnivorous. A high-protein diet based on quality betta pellets, supplemented with frozen or live foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, daphnia and mosquito larvae. Freeze-dried foods are acceptable if soaked before feeding. Feed small portions to avoid overfeeding.465
Company who they like around
Males are highly territorial and must be housed alone. Females may be kept in small groups in a well-planted tank, but aggression can still occur. Rosetail bettas are not suitable for community tanks with fin-nipping species or other brightly coloured, long-finned fish. They are best kept as solitary pets.465
The story where it all began
The rosetail betta is a selectively bred variety of Betta splendens, developed in the late 1980s and early 1990s by the Chenmaswil team, Rajiv Masillamoni, Laurent Chenot and Jeff Wilson. While refining the modern halfmoon betta, Jeff Wilson bred the first 'mutants' with excessive fin branching. These fish were presented at the IBC convention around 1993/1994 as 'blonde diamond halfmoons'. The name 'rosetail' was coined later by Jeff Wilson. The excessive branching in the caudal, dorsal and anal fins gives the tail a rose-like appearance. Unfortunately, the extreme form comes with health problems: the fish are weaker, grow more slowly, have paler bodies, and often struggle to swim and breed. Today, rosetails are bred in various degrees, from moderate to extreme, and are available in many colours and patterns.1235

Owner questions the things everyone asks
How often should I feed my Rosetail Betta?
Feed your Rosetail Betta once daily with small portions to avoid overfeeding. Furry Diary's starting plan suggests feeding every day. Stick to high-protein betta pellets as a staple, and offer frozen or live treats like bloodworms a few times a week.465 Furry Diary plan
What does a Rosetail Betta eat, and what should it never eat?
They are carnivores and thrive on quality betta pellets, plus frozen or live foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, daphnia, and mosquito larvae. Avoid foods with lots of fillers or low protein, and never feed them anything that could cause bloating. For specific amounts, check the food label and ask your vet.465
How much space does a Rosetail Betta need?
A minimum of 5 gallons (19 litres) is recommended, but a 10-gallon (38 litres) tank is easier to keep stable and gives your betta room to swim and rest. Provide gentle filtration, broad-leaf plants, and resting spots near the surface since their heavy fins make strong currents difficult.465
What temperature, light or water does a Rosetail Betta need?
Keep the water temperature between 24-30°C (76-82°F), pH 6-8, and hardness 1-15 dGH. They need a heater, a gentle filter, and regular access to the surface to breathe. Provide soft lighting and avoid strong currents, as their fins tire easily.465
How often should I clean a Rosetail Betta's home?
Furry Diary's starting plan recommends a weekly 25% water change and a weekly water test, plus rinsing the filter once a month. Keeping the tank clean is extra important for Rosetails because their delicate fins are prone to infection. Always use a gentle siphon and avoid disturbing your betta too much.65 Furry Diary plan
Can a Rosetail Betta live with others?
Males are highly territorial and must be housed alone. Females can sometimes be kept in small groups in a well-planted tank, but aggression may still occur. They are not suitable for community tanks with fin-nipping or brightly coloured fish, so a solitary setup is best.465
How long does a Rosetail Betta live?
With proper care, a Rosetail Betta typically lives 3 to 5 years. Good water quality, a balanced diet, and a stress-free environment help them reach the upper end of that range.46
Can I handle a Rosetail Betta?
It's best not to handle your Rosetail Betta, as their heavy, ruffled fins are very delicate and can tear easily. If you need to move them, use a soft container or net gently. Always support their body and avoid any rough contact.65
