At a glance the quick version
Adult koi commonly reach 24 to 36 inches (61 to 91 cm) in length.
Looks how to spot one
scales
Sanke have a sturdy, deep-bodied carp shape with two barbels on each side of the upper jaw. Their scales are typically large and neat, and the overall body shape is prized in koi keeping, with a smooth, balanced outline.5
Personality what they are like
Sanke koi are generally peaceful, social and curious. They often learn to recognise their keeper and may come to the surface for food or gentle hand-feeding. Like all koi, they are still prey animals, so sudden hiding or flashing can be a sign of stress or illness.3
Daily activity how busy a day looks
Sanke need plenty of open water to swim continuously. A single 10-inch koi should have at least 100 gallons, and a small group is better in 1,000 gallons or more. They are moderate swimmers and enjoy cruising around the pond, exploring and gently competing at feeding time.3
Grooming and care the hands-on bits
The main care commitment is pond management. Clean, well-oxygenated water with stable parameters is far more important than any food or supplement. Regular water testing, good filtration and avoiding overcrowding are essential. Sanke are sensitive to water quality, and poor conditions can show up as dull colours or a yellow tint on the white areas.31
Home where they are happiest
Sanke are pond fish and need a large outdoor pond of at least 1,000 gallons for a small group. Water temperature should stay between about 13 and 26°C (55 to 79°F). They need good filtration, oxygenation and stable water chemistry. They are not suitable for small aquariums as adults.41
Food basics what goes in the bowl
Sanke are omnivores. A high-quality floating koi pellet is the staple, with occasional frozen foods like bloodworms or mysis, plus some greens. Diets with colour enhancers such as spirulina or krill can help develop and maintain the red and black patterns, but overfeeding is the main cause of water-quality problems.41
Company who they like around
Sanke are social fish and do best in small groups with other peaceful koi of similar size. They are not aggressive and can be kept with other pond fish that share similar water needs. They are not suitable for indoor aquariums as adults and are generally legal to keep in most countries, but always check local regulations.34
The story where it all began
The Taisho Sanke is a tricolour koi variety that first appeared in Japan in the early 1900s, during the Taisho Emperor's reign. It began as a natural mutation in Kohaku (white and red) spawn, and a breeder named Eizburo Hoshino crossed a Kohaku with a Shiro Bekko (white with black) to create the first Sanke. Later, Torakichi Kawikame stabilised the bloodline, which became known as the Torazo line, and all modern Sanke descend from it. What makes Sanke different from the plain koi is its pattern: a white base with red (hi) and black (sumi) markings, with the black spots smaller and more evenly distributed than in the similar Showa variety.61

Owner questions the things everyone asks
How often should I feed my Taisho Sanke Koi?
Feed your Sanke once a day during the warm season, as Furry Diary's starting plan suggests. In cooler months, reduce feeding as their metabolism slows. Always follow the food label and avoid overfeeding to keep water quality good.4 Furry Diary plan
What does a Taisho Sanke Koi eat, and what should it never eat?
They are omnivores and thrive on a high-quality floating koi pellet as a staple, with occasional frozen treats like bloodworms or mysis and some greens. What to never feed varies by individual health, so ask a vet or experienced breeder for a complete list of foods to avoid.4
How much space does a Taisho Sanke Koi need?
A single Sanke needs at least 100 gallons, but a small group is better in a pond of 1,000 gallons or more. They are pond fish and need plenty of open water to swim, so a large outdoor pond is ideal.34
What temperature, light or water does a Taisho Sanke Koi need?
Keep water temperature between 13 and 26°C (55-79°F) with stable chemistry and good filtration. They need well-oxygenated water; lighting is not critical but a natural day-night cycle is fine.41
How often should I clean a Taisho Sanke Koi's home?
Furry Diary's plan suggests daily pond checks, water testing every two weeks, and filter cleaning monthly. Consistent maintenance is key to their health.3 Furry Diary plan
Can a Taisho Sanke Koi live with others?
Yes, they are social and do best in small groups with other peaceful koi or pond fish of similar size. They are not aggressive and enjoy company.34
How long does a Taisho Sanke Koi live?
With proper care, a Taisho Sanke Koi can live 25 to 50 years, making them a long-term companion.34
Can I handle a Taisho Sanke Koi?
It's best to avoid handling them as they are sensitive and can become stressed. Gentle hand-feeding is possible, but never lift them out of water.3
