Looks how to spot one
scales
The veiltail betta has a long, flowing tail fin that droops down in a single, continuous curve, like a veil. Its body is streamlined and laterally compressed, with large, fan-like dorsal and anal fins that also trail elegantly. The fins are delicate and can be prone to damage if the tank is barren.45
Personality what they are like
Veiltail bettas are generally peaceful and docile with other fish species, and they often show curiosity towards their owners, wiggling their tails and swimming over to watch. However, males are extremely aggressive towards other male bettas and will fight to defend territory, so they must be kept alone or with compatible tank mates.32
Daily activity how busy a day looks
Low to moderate activity. They enjoy exploring a planted tank with hiding spots and calm water. Strong water flow stresses them, so a gentle filter is best.61
Grooming and care the hands-on bits
Regular water changes are essential to keep ammonia and waste low, especially in smaller tanks. The water should be warm (76-81°F) and acidic to neutral (pH 6.5-8.0). Avoid strong filtration; bettas prefer still or slow-moving water. Keep the tank covered because bettas can jump.617
Home where they are happiest
A minimum of 5 gallons for a single fish, with a gentle filter, heater, and plenty of live or silk plants. The tank should have hiding places and calm water. In the wild, bettas live in shallow, warm, acidic waters like rice paddies and ponds. They are labyrinth fish and breathe air, so they need access to the surface.162
Food basics what goes in the bowl
Carnivorous. In the wild they eat insect larvae, crustaceans and small invertebrates. In captivity they need a high-protein diet of quality betta pellets, flakes, and occasional treats like bloodworms, brine shrimp or daphnia.72
Company who they like around
Males must be housed alone or with peaceful, non-fin-nipping fish. Two males will fight, sometimes to the death. Females can be kept in small groups (sororities) with plenty of space and plants. Bettas are territorial and need their own space.23
The story where it all began
The veiltail is the first long-finned variety of domesticated Betta splendens, developed through selective breeding in the mid-20th century. Its tail shape is genetically dominant over other fin types, which is why it became the most common betta in pet stores. Wild bettas are dull brown or green, but centuries of breeding for colour and finnage have produced the spectacular veiltail we see today. The species has been kept in Thailand since at least the 14th century, originally for fighting contests, but modern breeding focuses on ornamental beauty.562

Owner questions the things everyone asks
How often should I feed my Veiltail Betta?
Feed your Veiltail Betta once daily with high-protein betta pellets or flakes, and offer occasional treats like bloodworms. Overfeeding can dirty the water, so follow the food label for amounts and check with your vet for specific needs.72 Furry Diary plan
What does a Veiltail Betta eat, and what should it never eat?
Your Veiltail Betta needs a carnivorous diet of quality betta pellets, flakes, and treats like bloodworms, brine shrimp, or daphnia. What it should never eat varies by individual; ask your vet or a good breeder for a list of foods to avoid.
How much space does a Veiltail Betta need?
A single Veiltail Betta needs at least a 5-gallon tank with a gentle filter and heater. More space gives them room to explore and helps keep water quality stable.162
What temperature, light or water does a Veiltail Betta need?
Keep the water warm between 76-81°F with a pH of 6.5-8.0, and use a gentle filter for calm, slow-moving water. Provide a covered tank with access to the surface for breathing; lighting should be moderate with plenty of hiding spots.617
How often should I clean a Veiltail Betta's home?
Change about 25% of the water every week, test water parameters weekly, and rinse the filter monthly. Regular cleaning keeps ammonia low and your betta healthy.61 Furry Diary plan
Can a Veiltail Betta live with others?
Male Veiltail Bettas must be kept alone or with very peaceful, non-fin-nipping fish; two males will fight to the death. Females can live in small groups with plenty of plants and space.23
How long does a Veiltail Betta live?
With good care, your Veiltail Betta can live 2 to 5 years. A clean tank and proper diet help them reach the upper end of that range.23
Can I handle a Veiltail Betta?
It's best not to handle your Veiltail Betta because their delicate fins can be easily damaged. Enjoy watching their curious nature as they swim over to greet you from outside the tank.45
