Looks how to spot one

Short, smooth coat; some grow longer hair on lower body and thighs, and some produce cashmere undercoats.

Spanish goats are usually rangy and large-framed rather than compact. They have strong feet and upright pasterns, with legs that are generally straight. Their ears are medium-sized and carried horizontally forward, and their horns are often large and twisted, especially in bucks.24

ColoursAny colour found in goatsVaried and often dazzling within a single herd2

Personality what they are like

Spanish goats are alert, curious and often a bit wary of people, but they become docile with regular gentle handling. They are not typically clingy or overly sociable, but they can be tamed with patience and repeated exposure.52

Daily activity how busy a day looks

They are active and agile, needing space to roam and browse. They are excellent at clearing brush and foraging, so they do best with access to rough pasture or woodland.25

Grooming and care the hands-on bits

Their short coats need minimal grooming, but they should be monitored for parasites despite their natural resistance. Hooves need regular trimming, and they need shelter from drafts in cooler climates.2

Home where they are happiest

They need secure fencing, ideally field fence or 4x4 woven wire, and a draft-free shelter. They are adaptable to hot climates and rugged terrain. In many urban or suburban areas, keeping goats may be restricted or require permits, so check local regulations.63

Food basics what goes in the bowl

They are herbivores that browse on grass, herbs, shrubs, weeds, tree bark and leaves, with a particular liking for brambles and blackberry. Under human care, they may need extra feed before breeding season.3

Company who they like around

Goats are social animals and should not be kept alone. Spanish goats are generally not especially sociable with humans, so they need the company of other goats. They are hardy and can be kept in a hands-off manner, but they still need regular health checks.2

The story where it all began

Spanish goats are a landrace breed that developed in the Americas from goats brought by Spanish explorers in the 1500s. These goats were valued for meat, milk and hides, and they became the only goats known across the southern US for over 300 years. With the arrival of other breeds in the 1800s, many were crossed or replaced, but purebred Spanish goats still exist today. They are now appreciated for their hardiness, parasite resistance and usefulness in brush clearing.12
