Coat and looks how to spot one
Long, smooth, silky coat with a centre parting and rosettes
The Peruvian wears one of the longest coats in the guinea pig world. Soft, straight hair flows from the whole body, with a long fringe (the frontal) that grows forward from the shoulders and falls over the face, and a sweep that drapes over the hindquarters. Rosettes on the head and hips help create the forward-falling fringe and a natural part down the back. In a show coat the hair forms an even curtain all round and can reach the floor; a satin variety has an extra glossy sheen.341
Personality what they are like
Peruvians are usually bright, inquisitive little animals that like to explore, although many are a little reserved at first and appreciate calm handling and a quiet setting while they build trust.1
Daily activity how busy a day looks
Like all guinea pigs they are awake for much of the day and night in short bursts, so they need daily room to roam, tunnels and shelters to explore, and space tall enough to stand on their hind legs and 'popcorn'.567
Grooming and care the hands-on bits
This is a high-maintenance coat. Comb or brush gently along the centre parting on a regular schedule so the hair does not tangle, and trim the coat regularly to keep it manageable. The breed is generally suggested for keepers who already have some guinea pig experience because of the grooming time involved.134
Home where they are happiest
Indoor housing suits the long coat best. zooplus suggests an enclosure of at least 120 x 60 cm with hides and toys; the RSPCA advises a dry, draught-free space kept around 17 to 20 C, with dust-free hay or absorbent shavings as bedding and one more hideaway than there are animals.16
Food basics what goes in the bowl
Unlimited good-quality hay is the core of the diet, plus fresh leafy greens and vegetables every day. Guinea pigs cannot make their own vitamin C, so it must come from food (roughly 10 mg a day is often quoted) via vitamin-C-rich vegetables or a fortified guinea pig pellet. Fresh water should always be available.251
Company who they like around
Guinea pigs are herd animals and should live with at least one other guinea pig; in the wild relatives live in small family groups of about 5 to 10. Switzerland even requires by law that guinea pigs be kept with a companion.52
The story where it all began
Guinea pigs were domesticated in the Andes of South America thousands of years ago, where they were kept as a food animal and featured in the art and rituals of cultures such as the Moche and the Inca. Spanish ships brought them to Europe during the colonial period, and there they became household pets and, later, exhibition animals. The long-coated form was originally shown under the name Angora before the name Peruvian took over. Fanciers selected for ever longer, silkier and denser coats, and the Peruvian became one of the classic long-haired show breeds, with written standards today in both the UK and the US. A satin-coated version, the Peruvian Satin, is shown as its own breed in the US.21348
Fun facts for the dinner table
- 1
Before it was called the Peruvian, this long-haired guinea pig was known as the Angora.3
- 2
A Peruvian's coat can grow to around 30 cm, long enough to trail along the floor.1
- 3
British judges expect a Peruvian's show coat to be roughly one inch long for every month of age.4
- 4
The frontal hair grows forward from the shoulders and should cover the face evenly, like a curtain.4
- 5
Long hair in guinea pigs is a recessive trait, so a long-haired pup needs the gene from both parents.3
- 6
In the US there is a separate Peruvian Satin breed whose hair has a glassy, lustrous shine.8
- 7
Under the British standard a Peruvian may be shown in any colour or mixture of colours.4

Owner questions the things everyone asks
How often should I feed my Peruvian Guinea Pig?
Your Peruvian needs unlimited good-quality hay every day, plus fresh leafy greens and vegetables daily. Furry Diary's starting plan is to refill hay and offer vitamin-C-rich veg each day. For exact pellet amounts, check the food label and ask your vet.251 Furry Diary plan
What should a Peruvian Guinea Pig eat, and which foods are dangerous?
Unlimited hay, daily leafy greens and vegetables, and a small amount of fortified guinea pig pellets provide essential vitamin C. Avoid foods like avocado, chocolate, onion, garlic, grapes, raisins, and dairy, as listed by the ASPCA. Always ask your vet for a complete safe list.25110
Should I bathe a Peruvian Guinea Pig?
Bathing is rarely needed and can stress them; spot-cleaning with a damp cloth is usually enough. If a bath becomes necessary, ask your vet or an experienced breeder for guidance. Their long coat needs regular brushing instead.
Does a Peruvian Guinea Pig need brushing?
Yes, daily brushing is essential to prevent tangles in their long, silky coat. Furry Diary's starting plan suggests brushing every day and trimming the coat every six weeks to keep it off the floor. This breed is best for experienced owners due to the grooming time.134 Furry Diary plan
How do I look after a Peruvian Guinea Pig's nails and teeth?
Trim nails roughly every four weeks, and check teeth weekly for overgrowth. Furry Diary's starting plan includes weekly teeth checks and monthly nail trims. A vet can show you the correct technique and spot any problems early. Furry Diary plan
How much space and exercise does a Peruvian Guinea Pig need?
They need daily room to roam, tunnels, and shelters, with an enclosure at least 120 x 60 cm. Keep the indoor space dry, draught-free, and around 17, 20°C. Furry Diary's plan includes daily floor time for exploration.16 Furry Diary plan
Should a Peruvian Guinea Pig live alone or with friends?
Guinea pigs are herd animals and must live with at least one other guinea pig for their well-being. Switzerland even requires this by law. A same-sex pair or small group works well, with one more hideaway than the number of animals.52
How long does a Peruvian Guinea Pig live?
Peruvian Guinea Pigs typically live 4 to 6 years. With good care, a healthy diet, and regular vet check-ups, they can enjoy a full, happy life.1
Is a Peruvian Guinea Pig a good pet for children?
They are bright and inquisitive but can be reserved at first, needing calm handling and a quiet setting. Because of the high grooming demands, they are better suited to experienced owners or families with older children who can help. Always supervise interactions.1
How do I hold a Peruvian Guinea Pig?
Support their whole body gently with one hand under the chest and the other under the hindquarters, keeping them close to you. They appreciate calm handling and may need time to build trust. Ask your vet or a good breeder to show you the safest technique.
