quills

The Pinto hedgehog has a coat of modified hairs called quills. The Pinto pattern means patches of white (unpigmented) quills appear in distinct groups among coloured quills. For example, a Chocolate Pinto has chocolate-coloured quills with white patches. This is a pattern, not a colour.2

ColoursPinto pattern: white patches mixed with any base colour such as chocolate, cinnamon, salt and pepper, snowflake, or albino21

Personality what they are like

Pinto hedgehogs are shy, nocturnal and more interested in exploring than cuddling. They rarely bite but can be startled. With calm, predictable handling and a quiet home, they learn to accept being held. They are solitary and should be housed alone. They are better suited to older children and adults who respect their nocturnal schedule.43

Daily activity how busy a day looks

Nocturnal and very active at night. They need a safe, solid-surface wheel (never wire-bottomed) for running. In the wild they travel miles each night. Daily exercise is important to prevent obesity. Supervised time outside the enclosure for exploration or swimming a few hours per week is beneficial.456

Grooming and care the hands-on bits

Moderate grooming. Quills need little care, but the enclosure must be kept clean and dry. Nail trimming may be needed. Regular health checks include monitoring weight with a kitchen gram scale, appetite, and stool quality. Annual veterinary exams are crucial, and female hedgehogs should be spayed to prevent uterine tumours.45

Home where they are happiest

A minimum enclosure size of 2 feet by 3 feet with smooth sides to prevent climbing. Provide a hiding spot for sleeping. Temperature must be kept at 75-85°F (24-29°C) using an external heat source like an undertank heater or heat bulb. Temperatures below 68°F (20°C) can trigger dangerous torpor. The enclosure should not be in a bedroom because the wheel is noisy at night. In some US states and municipalities, a permit is required or keeping a hedgehog is illegal. A USDA permit is needed to breed, transport, sell or exhibit them.453

Food basics what goes in the bowl

Feed a measured, balanced staple diet: a high-quality hedgehog food mixed with a high-quality, low-fat cat food. Portion control is essential to prevent obesity. Offer gut-loaded insects such as crickets or mealworms as treats, not as the main food. Fresh water must always be available. Occasional small amounts of produce can be offered, but sugary fruit and fatty treats should be limited.45

Company who they like around

Hedgehogs are solitary and must be housed alone. They are only social during breeding season in the wild. They can bond with their owner through calm, patient handling, but they are not naturally cuddly. They are illegal to keep as pets in some US states and municipalities, and a permit may be required in others.53

The story where it all began

The Pinto is a colour pattern, not a separate species. It occurs in the African Pygmy Hedgehog, a domestic hybrid of the white-bellied hedgehog (Atelerix albiventris) and the Algerian hedgehog (Atelerix algirus). This hybrid was first established in the US pet trade from the 1980s onward. The Pinto pattern is characterised by patches of white (unpigmented) quills mixed with coloured quills, appearing in distinct groups. This pattern does not occur in wild hedgehogs and is one of many colour morphs bred in captivity.217

Treats they will love homemade and simple

Hedgehog Fruit and Veggie Medley

Fresh fruits and vegetables provide variety and enrichment, but should only be offered in small amounts as treats.

You need

  • 1 small slice of apple (no seeds)
  • 1 small slice of pear (no seeds)
  • 1 small slice of banana
  • 1 teaspoon cooked carrot (soft, no seasoning)

How

  1. Wash all fruit and vegetables thoroughly.
  2. Cut the apple, pear, banana, and cooked carrot into very small, bite-sized pieces (no larger than a pea).
  3. Mix the pieces together in a small bowl.
  4. Offer no more than 1–3 teaspoons of the mixture per day, two to three times a week.

How much: 1–3 teaspoons per day, 2–3 times per week

Gut-Loaded Insect Treats

Insects are a natural and favourite food for hedgehogs, providing protein and mental stimulation through hunting.

You need

  • 5–10 live or frozen mealworms, crickets, or waxworms (store-bought only)
  • Insect gut-loading food (available from pet stores)

How

  1. Purchase insects from a pet store or reputable supplier; never use wild-caught insects.
  2. Feed the insects a nutritious gut-loading diet for at least 24 hours before offering them to your hedgehog.
  3. Place the live or thawed insects in a shallow dish or scatter them in the enclosure for foraging.
  4. Offer 5–10 insects per day, but limit mealworms to 2–3 times per week due to their high fat content.
  5. Remove any uneaten insects after 30 minutes to prevent them from hiding in the enclosure.

How much: 5–10 insects per day; mealworms no more than 2–3 times per week
