Looks how to spot one
heavy draft
The Belgian Draft is a massive, powerfully built horse with a broad chest, strong hindquarters, and thick, sturdy legs. Its coat is dense and can be quite thick in winter, providing natural insulation.12
Personality what they are like
The Belgian Draft is renowned for its calm, gentle, and sensible disposition. Despite its enormous size, it is docile, patient, and willing to work, making it a reliable partner for both experienced and novice handlers. It is also described as brave, lively, and good-humoured.346
Daily activity how busy a day looks
Belgian Drafts require regular exercise and meaningful work, such as pulling carts, ploughing, or riding. They also benefit from daily turnout in a pasture to move freely. Without sufficient activity, they may become bored or overweight.46
Grooming and care the hands-on bits
Basic grooming includes regular brushing to keep the coat clean and free of mud, especially after work. Hoof care is essential, as is routine veterinary and dental check-ups. In winter, the thick coat allows them to stay outdoors, but shelter should always be available. They are generally easy keepers.34
Home where they are happiest
A stable with a dry, clean bed and access to a spacious pasture or paddock is ideal. Fencing must be sturdy to contain such a large animal. They need protection from extreme weather, though their thick coat provides good cold tolerance.34
Food basics what goes in the bowl
Non-working horses thrive on good quality hay or pasture grass, with a vitamin and mineral supplement if needed. Working horses require additional energy, typically about 2 kg of complete horse feed per day, adjusted for workload. Fresh water must always be available.3
Company who they like around
As herd animals, Belgian Drafts benefit from the company of other horses. However, they are so gentle and people-oriented that they can bond closely with humans if kept alone, provided they receive plenty of attention. There are no legal restrictions on keeping this breed.64
The story where it all began
The Belgian Draft originates from the heavy farm horses of central Belgium, developed over centuries from local strains such as the Colosse de la Méhaigne, Gris de Nivelles et du Hainaut, and Gros de la Dendre. In the 1800s, Belgium became a major centre for draft horse breeding, and the breed was exported to Russia, Germany, Italy, and the United States. American breeders later refined the type, creating a horse with more style and lighter movement while retaining its power and gentle nature.127
