Looks how to spot one

exoskeleton

The body is flattened and broad, with serrated edges and intricate patterns on the forewings that mimic the veins and blemishes of a dead leaf. A large shield-like prothorax adds to the leaf illusion. The wings of males extend beyond the abdomen, while females have shorter wings.21

Coloursbrown with dark and light spots2

Personality what they are like

Dead leaf mantises are generally docile and not aggressive toward humans. They can be easily startled, sometimes playing dead by lying motionless or, as adults, performing a deimatic display where they flash black-and-white striped wings and raise their forelegs to reveal a red zebra pattern. They are best enjoyed as display animals rather than handled.24

Daily activity how busy a day looks

They do not need forced exercise. Provide a tall enclosure with vertical branches, mesh, and sturdy plants so they can climb, perch, and hang freely for molting. Enclosure height should be at least three times the mantis's body length, and width at least twice the body length.24

Grooming and care the hands-on bits

Minimal grooming is needed. Maintain humidity between 50% and 80% by misting regularly, with good ventilation to prevent mould. Temperature should be 24-30 °C during the day, dropping to 18-23 °C at night. Clean the enclosure periodically to remove waste and uneaten prey.254

Home where they are happiest

A tall, well-ventilated terrarium with climbing surfaces and a substrate like coconut fibre or peat moss to help hold humidity. For an adult, a size of at least 30 x 20 x 30 cm is recommended. Provide dead leaves and perches for hiding and ambush. They are solitary and should be housed individually to prevent cannibalism.214

Food basics what goes in the bowl

Carnivorous ambush predators that eat live insects. Small nymphs start on flightless fruit flies, then progress to larger flies, moths, roaches, and crickets. Feed according to abdomen condition: a flat abdomen means it is ready to eat, a full one means it should be left alone. Young nymphs may eat daily, adults every 2-5 days.41

Company who they like around

Solitary. They should be kept individually because cannibalism is likely if housed together, especially as they grow larger. Young nymphs may be raised together briefly if well fed, but individual housing is safest.24

The story where it all began

The dead leaf mantis, native to the rainforests of Southeast Asia, has been kept by insect enthusiasts for many years due to its remarkable leaf mimicry. It is one of the larger cryptic mantis species successfully bred in captivity. Its popularity among hobbyists has grown as care knowledge has spread, though it remains a species for intermediate keepers rather than complete beginners.24

Owner questions the things everyone asks

How often should I feed my Dead Leaf Mantis?

Feed your Dead Leaf Mantis based on its abdomen condition: a flat abdomen means it is ready to eat, a full one means it should be left alone. Young nymphs may eat daily, while adults typically eat every 2 to 5 days. Always offer live insects appropriate for its size.41

What does a Dead Leaf Mantis eat, and what should it never eat?

Your Dead Leaf Mantis is a carnivorous ambush predator that eats live insects like flightless fruit flies, moths, roaches, and crickets. It should never be fed anything other than live insects; for specific foods to avoid, consult a vet or experienced breeder.41

How much space does a Dead Leaf Mantis need?

A tall enclosure is essential. For an adult, a size of at least 30 x 20 x 30 cm is recommended, with height at least three times the mantis's body length and width at least twice its body length. Provide vertical branches and mesh for climbing and molting.241

What temperature, light or water does a Dead Leaf Mantis need?

Keep the temperature between 24 and 30 °C during the day, dropping to 18 to 23 °C at night. Maintain humidity between 50% and 80% by misting regularly, and ensure good ventilation. They get moisture from misting and their prey; no water bowl is needed.254

How often should I clean a Dead Leaf Mantis's home?

Clean the enclosure periodically to remove waste and uneaten prey. The exact frequency depends on the setup, but a spot clean every few days and a deeper clean every few weeks works well. Always keep the habitat well ventilated to prevent mould.254

Can a Dead Leaf Mantis live with others?

No, Dead Leaf Mantises are solitary and should be kept individually because cannibalism is likely, especially as they grow larger. Young nymphs may be raised together briefly if well fed, but individual housing is safest.24

How long does a Dead Leaf Mantis live?

Lifespan varies by species and care conditions. For specific information on your mantis, please ask a vet or a good breeder who can give you details based on the exact species and its care.

Can I handle a Dead Leaf Mantis?

Dead Leaf Mantises are best enjoyed as display animals rather than handled. They are generally docile but can be easily startled, and handling may stress them. If you must move them, do so gently and infrequently.24
