Looks how to spot one

Exoskeleton

The body is slender and mottled pale yellowy-brown, with enlarged, claw-like pedipalps and a long, tapering tail (metasoma) ending in a telson with a sting. It has four pairs of clawed legs and a triangular sternum. The exoskeleton fluoresces under ultraviolet light, except when freshly moulted.1

Personality what they are like

Timid, fast and skittish. It prefers to flee rather than sting, but may sting if provoked. Its venom is relatively mild, but it is not a pet for handling. Best observed in a secure enclosure.21

Daily activity how busy a day looks

Nocturnal and active at night. Needs a secure enclosure with climbable hides such as bark or rocks, and a shallow water dish. Provide a temperature gradient of 24-30°C and humidity of 60-75%.2

Grooming and care the hands-on bits

Low maintenance. Spot-clean waste and replace substrate every few months. Handle only with tools, never bare hands. Moulting scorpions are vulnerable and should be left undisturbed.2

Home where they are happiest

A terrarium with a secure lid, slightly moist substrate (e.g. coconut fibre or soil), pieces of bark or flat rocks for hiding, and a shallow water dish. Keep at 24-30°C and 60-75% humidity. Provide a temperature gradient so the scorpion can thermoregulate.2

Food basics what goes in the bowl

Small live insects such as crickets, roaches and mealworms. Feed once or twice a week; remove uneaten prey after a day.2

Company who they like around

Solitary. Cannibalism can occur, especially if one scorpion is moulting or smaller. Keep individuals separately. Not a social pet.1

The story where it all began

The lesser brown scorpion has been spread around the world by human trade and travel, and it is also kept in the pet trade. Its use as a pet may have contributed to its introduction to new areas. It is considered an intermediate-level pet because of its speed and skittish nature.12

Recognised by the official bits

CABI Compendium
Described as the most widely distributed scorpion in the world, found in tropical areas worldwide.1

Owner questions the things everyone asks

How often should I feed my Lesser Brown Scorpion?

Feed your scorpion once or twice a week, offering small live insects. Adjust the schedule based on its size and moult stage, and remove any uneaten prey after a day. Furry Diary's starting plan suggests feeding as needed, depending on the individual.2 Furry Diary plan

What does a Lesser Brown Scorpion eat, and what should it never eat?

It eats small live insects like crickets, roaches, and mealworms. Foods it should never eat are not specified in our sources, so please ask a vet or experienced breeder for a safe list. Always offer only live prey.2

How much space does a Lesser Brown Scorpion need?

Provide a secure terrarium with a lid, hiding spots like bark or rocks, and a shallow water dish. Exact dimensions vary with the scorpion's size; consult a good breeder for the right enclosure size.2

What temperature, light or water does a Lesser Brown Scorpion need?

Keep the enclosure at 24, 30°C with a temperature gradient so it can thermoregulate, and maintain humidity at 60, 75%. Provide a shallow water dish for drinking. No special lighting is needed since it is nocturnal.2

How often should I clean a Lesser Brown Scorpion's home?

Spot-clean waste and remove leftover food weekly. Replace the substrate every few months, Furry Diary's plan suggests every 180 days. This keeps the enclosure fresh and your scorpion healthy.2 Furry Diary plan

Can a Lesser Brown Scorpion live with others?

No, it is solitary and may cannibalize tank mates, especially if one is smaller or moulting. Keep each scorpion in its own enclosure for safety.1

How long does a Lesser Brown Scorpion live?

Lesser Brown Scorpions typically live between 2 and 5 years. With good care, they can enjoy a full lifespan within that range.214

Can I handle a Lesser Brown Scorpion?

This scorpion is timid and fast, and it may sting if provoked, so it is not a pet for handling. If you need to move it, use tools like tongs, never bare hands. It is best observed in its secure enclosure.21
