Looks how to spot one

Hair (setae) and exoskeleton

The body is covered in fine hairs, but unlike many New World tarantulas, this species lacks urticating hairs. The carapace and legs are velvety black, with vivid orange or tiger-like stripes on the abdomen and bright orange patches at the joints of the legs. The undersides of the feet show an iridescent blue-green sheen, visible when the spider raises its front legs in a threat display.14

ColoursBlackOrangeGrey-brown (males when mature)14

Personality what they are like

This tarantula is very defensive, skittish, and fast. It would rather flee than fight, but if cornered it will raise its front legs and show its fangs. It has no urticating hairs, so it relies on speed and biting when threatened. It is not a handling pet and should be treated with respect and caution.624

Daily activity how busy a day looks

This is an arboreal species that needs a tall enclosure with plenty of vertical space. It will climb, hide in cork bark tubes, and build webbing retreats. It is most active at night and will bolt into its hide if disturbed. It does not need a large floor area, but height and climbing structures are essential.627

Grooming and care the hands-on bits

No grooming is needed, but the enclosure must be kept clean. Remove uneaten prey promptly, especially during moulting. Provide a water dish and change water regularly. Mist occasionally to maintain humidity, but ensure good ventilation to prevent stagnant air. Handle only with tools, never by hand.72

Home where they are happiest

A tall, well-ventilated terrarium with vertical cork bark, fake plants, and a water dish. Temperature should be around 80-85°F (27-29°C) with moderate to high humidity. The substrate should be kept slightly moist but not wet. This species is not recommended for beginners due to its speed and defensiveness.624

Food basics what goes in the bowl

Carnivorous. Feed on live insects such as crickets, dubia roaches, and mealworms. Adults eat about 7 large crickets per week, or feed every 1-2 weeks. Young spiders should be fed more frequently, 2-3 times a week. Remove uneaten prey after a day.678

Company who they like around

This is a solitary species and must be kept alone. It is not a social animal and will not tolerate company. It is also not a pet for handling; it is very defensive and will bite if it feels threatened. Keep it in a secure enclosure and always use a catch cup or tongs for maintenance.78

The story where it all began

The Venezuelan Suntiger Tarantula was first described by F. Saager in 1994. It is native to the tropical forests of Venezuela, Guyana, and Brazil. It has been kept in the exotic pet trade for many years and is popular among experienced tarantula keepers due to its striking appearance and interesting behaviour. However, it is not recommended for beginners because of its speed, defensiveness, and potent venom.134

Recognised by the official bits

First described by F. Saager in 1994
Recognised as a distinct species of arboreal tarantula, noted for its black body with orange markings and lack of urticating hairs.1
