Looks how to spot one

Exoskeleton

This scorpion has a very elongated, flattened body and powerful pincers (pedipalps). Its shape is perfectly suited to squeezing into narrow rock crevices and under bark or leaf litter.1

ColoursDark brown to blackYellowish-orange vesicle (tail segment)4

Personality what they are like

Rainforest scorpions are very docile and not aggressive. They are not considered dangerous to humans, though they are mildly venomous. Handling is not recommended.2

Daily activity how busy a day looks

These scorpions are nocturnal and hunt at night. They do not need exercise but require a secure enclosure with hiding places. They are good climbers on rough surfaces but cannot climb smooth glass.2

Grooming and care the hands-on bits

Very low maintenance. Remove uneaten food after 24 hours. Clean mould or fungi as needed. A full substrate change is only required about once a year. They moult (shed their exoskeleton) periodically and should be left undisturbed during this vulnerable time.2

Home where they are happiest

A plastic or glass terrarium (minimum 20 cm high x 30 cm wide x 20 cm deep) with a moist coco-peat substrate about 3 cm deep. Provide a flat rock or piece of bark as a shelter. Maintain humidity at 60-90% and temperature between 22-28°C. Brief cooling to 10-20°C in winter is acceptable if daytime temperatures reach around 20°C.25

Food basics what goes in the bowl

Feed live or freshly dead insects once or twice a week. Crickets and cockroaches are ideal. Offer prey about one quarter the size of the scorpion. Remove any uneaten food after 24 hours.2

Company who they like around

This species can be cannibalistic, so individuals should be kept alone. Pairing for breeding must be done under close supervision. They are mildly venomous but not aggressive; handling is not recommended.2

The story where it all began

The Waigeo rainforest scorpion was first described in 1844 by French paleontologist and zoologist Paul Gervais. It has been commonly kept in captivity in Australia for many years because it is large, non-burrowing, and relatively easy to maintain. Its docile nature and interesting behaviours, such as the mating 'promenade à deux' and the mother carrying young on her back, make it a popular choice among scorpion enthusiasts.14

Owner questions the things everyone asks

How often should I feed my Waigeo Rainforest Scorpion?

Feed your Waigeo Rainforest Scorpion live or freshly dead insects once or twice a week. Crickets and cockroaches are ideal, and prey should be about a quarter of the scorpion's size. Furry Diary's starting plan reminds that feeding frequency depends on the scorpion's size and moult stage. Remove any uneaten food after 24 hours.2 Furry Diary plan

What does a Waigeo Rainforest Scorpion eat, and what should it never eat?

Your scorpion eats live or freshly dead insects such as crickets and cockroaches. Never offer prey larger than about a quarter of its body size, and always remove uneaten food after 24 hours to keep the enclosure clean.2

How much space does a Waigeo Rainforest Scorpion need?

A plastic or glass terrarium with minimum dimensions 20 cm high, 30 cm wide, and 20 cm deep is ideal. Provide a flat rock or piece of bark as a shelter so your scorpion feels secure.25

What temperature, light or water does a Waigeo Rainforest Scorpion need?

Keep the temperature between 22 and 28°C, with brief winter cooling to 10-20°C acceptable if daytime reaches 20°C. Humidity should stay between 60 and 90%. Provide a water dish; Furry Diary's starting plan suggests refreshing it every 2 days. Lighting needs are not specified; as a nocturnal species, bright light is not required. For specific lighting advice, ask a good breeder.25 Furry Diary plan

How often should I clean a Waigeo Rainforest Scorpion's home?

Clean your scorpion's home by removing leftover food daily or every few days. Furry Diary's starting plan suggests a weekly spot clean. A full substrate change is needed about once a year, though the plan recommends every 180 days. Always leave your scorpion undisturbed during moulting.2 Furry Diary plan

Can a Waigeo Rainforest Scorpion live with others?

No, Waigeo Rainforest Scorpions can be cannibalistic, so they should be kept alone. Pairing for breeding is possible only under close supervision.2

How long does a Waigeo Rainforest Scorpion live?

Your scorpion can live between 5 and 10 years with proper care.2

Can I handle a Waigeo Rainforest Scorpion?

Handling is not recommended. Although they are very docile and not aggressive, they are mildly venomous and handling can stress them. Enjoy watching them in their enclosure instead.2
