Personality what they are like

Black rat snakes are generally calm and docile, especially captive-bred individuals. They are curious by nature and may vibrate their tail when startled, mimicking a rattlesnake, but rarely bite. With regular, gentle handling they become very easy to manage.362

Daily activity how busy a day looks

Black rat snakes are diurnal and very active, enjoying climbing and exploring. An enclosure that is taller rather than just long, with sturdy branches for climbing, is ideal. They appreciate a hide box and a large water bowl for soaking.12

Grooming and care the hands-on bits

Minimal grooming is needed. The enclosure should be spot-cleaned after defecation with a reptile-safe disinfectant. Ambient temperature should be 24-28°C (75-82°F) with a basking spot of 31-32°C (88-90°F). No special UVB lighting is required, though a full-spectrum lamp can be beneficial. Keep the enclosure dry to avoid respiratory or skin infections.2

Home where they are happiest

A 30-40 gallon glass aquarium with a secure screen lid is suitable for an adult; larger and taller enclosures are better. Use a substrate such as cypress mulch (avoid cedar). Provide at least one hide box and a sturdy climbing branch. A water bowl large enough for the snake to soak should be kept clean and not so full that it overflows.12

Food basics what goes in the bowl

Black rat snakes are carnivores. In the wild they eat small rodents, birds, eggs, frogs, lizards and large insects. In captivity, feed them dead mice or rats appropriate for the snake's size. Adults should be fed every 7-10 days. Never offer live prey as it can injure the snake.26

Company who they like around

Solitary. Black rat snakes are not venomous and are legal to keep in most places, though local laws should always be checked. They are safe for responsible owners and can be handled gently, but should not be startled or handled after the owner has touched food.42

The story where it all began

Black rat snakes have been kept as pets for many decades. They were once considered good for pest control around farms and were called ‘pilot snakes’ because they shared winter dens with venomous species. In the pet trade they are now bred for colour morphs such as albino, leucistic and scaleless. They are still less popular than corn snakes but are valued by beginners and experienced keepers alike for their hardiness and calm nature.312
