Looks how to spot one

scales

Smooth, glossy scales with an oval head, round pupils, and a slender body. The base colour is brown to black, interrupted by 40 or more yellowish-white crossbands. The scales between the bands lighten with age, giving older snakes a speckled or yellowish look. The belly has a checkered pattern of dark and light squares, and the tongue is black.23

Personality what they are like

Florida kingsnakes are generally docile and calm in captivity, making them excellent pets. Newly caught individuals may bite at first but quickly settle down with regular gentle handling. They are secretive by nature and prefer to stay hidden, but once accustomed to you they tolerate handling well. They are not dangerous to people or pets, though they may bite in self-defence if deliberately bothered.243

Daily activity how busy a day looks

Diurnal (active by day), though juveniles may be crepuscular. They are not highly active but benefit from a large enclosure with plenty of hiding spots and climbing opportunities. Regular handling 1-2 times weekly provides enrichment and exercise.35

Grooming and care the hands-on bits

Low maintenance. Provide a water bowl large enough for soaking, and clean the enclosure regularly. Shedding is normal; ensure humidity is adequate during shed cycles. No special grooming needed.4

Home where they are happiest

A minimum enclosure of 48" L x 24" W x 24" H (120 x 60 x 60 cm) is recommended, larger is better. Use aspen shavings, cypress mulch, coconut fibre, or organic topsoil as substrate; avoid pine or cedar. Provide a hide box and a water bowl. Daytime temperature 84-90°F (29-32°C), night 68-75°F (20-24°C). A 2-3 month cooling period at 55-65°F (13-18°C) may be needed for breeding.643

Food basics what goes in the bowl

Obligate carnivore. Feed whole prey: rodents (pinkie mice to large mice depending on size), also chicks, quail, hamsters, gerbils, anoles, house geckos, and even other snakes. Hatchlings every 5-7 days, juveniles every 7-10 days, adults every 10-14 days. Always use frozen-thawed prey warmed to 75-100°F, and offer with feeding tweezers to avoid accidental bites.36

Company who they like around

Solitary; house alone. They are not venomous and are safe to keep as pets. In some regions, collection from the wild may be restricted due to population declines; always obtain captive-bred individuals from reputable breeders.27

The story where it all began

The Florida kingsnake is a colour and pattern variety of the eastern kingsnake complex. It differs from the plain eastern kingsnake (Lampropeltis getula) by having 40-78 narrow, light-coloured crossbands and a degenerate chain-like pattern on the sides, with the scales between the bands lightening to yellowish or speckled as the snake ages. Its belly is checkered with dark and light squares. This variety is native only to peninsular Florida and has been popular in the pet trade for decades due to its attractive appearance, hardy nature, and calm temperament. Captive breeding has helped reduce pressure on wild populations.724

Owner questions the things everyone asks

How often should I feed my Florida Kingsnake?

Feed hatchlings every 5-7 days, juveniles every 7-10 days, and adults every 10-14 days. Always use frozen-thawed prey warmed to 75-100°F. For exact amounts, check the food label and ask your vet.36 Furry Diary plan

What does a Florida Kingsnake eat, and what should it never eat?

Your Florida Kingsnake eats whole prey like rodents, chicks, quail, and even other snakes. Always use frozen-thawed prey and never feed live prey, as it can injure the snake. Avoid any prey that is not whole or is too large.36

How much space does a Florida Kingsnake need?

A minimum enclosure of 48 inches long, 24 inches wide, and 24 inches tall is recommended, but larger is always better. Provide a hide box and a water bowl for soaking.643

What temperature, light or water does a Florida Kingsnake need?

Provide a daytime temperature of 84-90°F and a nighttime drop to 68-75°F. A water bowl large enough for soaking is essential. Lighting requirements are not covered in the care guides; ask a vet or breeder for specific advice.643

How often should I clean a Florida Kingsnake's home?

Spot clean the enclosure every 2 days and do a full clean every 30 days. This keeps the habitat healthy and your snake comfortable. Furry Diary plan

Can a Florida Kingsnake live with others?

No, Florida Kingsnakes are solitary and should be housed alone. They may even eat other snakes, so never house with others.27

How long does a Florida Kingsnake live?

With proper care, a Florida Kingsnake can live 10 to 20 years. Provide a stable environment and regular vet checkups.13

Can I handle a Florida Kingsnake?

Yes, they are generally docile and tolerate handling well once they settle in. Handle gently 1-2 times a week for enrichment, but always respect their secretive nature.2435
