At a glance the quick version
Looks how to spot one
Domed shell with scutes
A sturdy, oblong-domed tortoise with a single undivided shell plate above the tail and a small spur on each thigh, which tells it apart from Hermann's tortoise. Males are smaller, with longer tails and a slightly hollowed underside.1
Daily activity how busy a day looks
Active by day in the warm months. Many populations rest through winter, and those in the hottest areas also slow down in high summer.314
Grooming and care the hands-on bits
Brumates in the cold months in most of its range, so keepers follow a seasonal cycle. A diet rich in coarse fibre plus calcium and UVB light supports normal growth.14
Home where they are happiest
Lives in a wide range of dry, open habitats including steppe, scrub, grassland, open woodland, coastal dunes and farmland.3
Food basics what goes in the bowl
Herbivore. Wild tortoises eat dozens of plant species, favouring weeds, legumes, flowers and seeds, and they also eat dried plant material. In captivity, dandelion and similar weeds are favourites. Lettuce is not a good staple, and a mix of fresh weeds with high-fibre dried plants is recommended.134
The story where it all began
Linnaeus named the species in 1758, even though it lives in North Africa and Asia as well as Greece. One account says the name points to its Greek range; another says the shell reminded him of Greek mosaic or lettering. Today about 12 subspecies are recognised, from the small Tunisian form to the large Anatolian ibera.231

Owner questions the things everyone asks
How often should I feed my Greek Tortoise?
Feed your Greek Tortoise daily during its active months with a variety of fresh weeds and dried plants. In winter it may brumate and not eat, so adjust accordingly. Furry Diary's starting plan includes fresh food every day.14 Furry Diary plan
What does a Greek Tortoise eat, and what should it never eat?
Greek Tortoises are herbivores and love dandelion, weeds, legumes, flowers, and seeds. Avoid lettuce as a staple and never feed animal protein or toxic plants. A mix of fresh weeds and high-fibre dried plants is best.134
How much space does a Greek Tortoise need?
Greek Tortoises need a large outdoor enclosure with dry, open spaces to roam. The exact size depends on your climate and setup, so ask a good breeder or exotic vet for guidance.3
What temperature, light or water does a Greek Tortoise need?
Provide a basking spot around 30-35°C and a cooler area. UVB lighting is essential for shell health, and a shallow water dish for drinking plus weekly soaks keeps them hydrated. Furry Diary's plan includes daily temperature checks and UVB bulb changes every 6 months.14 Furry Diary plan
How often should I clean a Greek Tortoise's home?
Spot clean your tortoise's enclosure every day and do a full clean once a month. This keeps the habitat healthy and your tortoise comfortable. Furry Diary plan
Can a Greek Tortoise live with others?
Greek Tortoises can live alone or in groups, but males may become territorial. For the best social setup, ask a breeder or vet who knows this species.
How long does a Greek Tortoise live?
Greek Tortoises are long-lived and can reach 50 years or more with good care. Lifespan varies, so ask your vet for specifics.
Can I handle a Greek Tortoise?
You can handle your Greek Tortoise gently for short periods, but too much handling can cause stress. Always support their body and avoid sudden movements.
