Looks how to spot one

Large tree-dwelling lizard with dewlap and dorsal crest

A big, long-tailed lizard with a row of soft spines along its back and tail and a large dewlap under the chin used for signalling and temperature control. On top of its head sits a small light-sensitive 'third eye' (parietal eye). Its leaf-shaped, finely serrated teeth are built for shredding plants.1

Personality what they are like

Intelligent and engaging, and can become genuinely affectionate, but the bond takes months of patient, gentle handling. Support the body from below and avoid sudden moves. Males can become more territorial during the breeding season.2

Daily activity how busy a day looks

Diurnal and arboreal, spending most time high up. Enjoys supervised free-roam time outside the enclosure for exercise. A strong swimmer in the wild.21

Grooming and care the hands-on bits

Mist twice a day or use an automatic system. Change loose substrate about monthly. Taming is an ongoing, daily process.2

Home where they are happiest

An adult needs at least about 3 x 1.5 x 1.8 m (10 x 5 x 6 ft), larger if possible; juveniles can start in about 120 x 60 x 120 cm. Basking surface around 50 C (120 F), air 24-31 C, nights 23-28 C. Humidity 60-80% by day, up to 100% at night. Strong UVB and bright lighting for 12-13 hours.2

Food basics what goes in the bowl

Herbivore. Roughly 60% dark leafy greens (collards, dandelion, turnip and mustard greens), 30% vegetables (squash, peppers, green beans) and 10% fruit, offered daily with a supplement.21

Company who they like around

Can live alone or in groups if the enclosure is scaled up, but adult males should not share space.2

The story where it all began

Carl Linnaeus described the green iguana in 1758. People in Central and South America have eaten it for around 7,000 years, giving rise to the nickname 'chicken of the trees'. It later became one of the most traded reptiles in the world pet market.1

Fun facts for the dinner table

  1. 1

It can drop about 15 m from a tree to the ground and land unharmed.1

  2. 2

It swims by tucking its legs against its body and sweeping its tail from side to side.1

  3. 3

Its parietal 'third eye' on top of the head senses changes in light and helps it spot shadows from above.1

  4. 4

Despite the name, populations come in many colours, from bluish in Peru to orange in Mexico.1

The care rhythm Furry Diary remembers it for you

Owner questions the things everyone asks

How often should I feed my Green Iguana?

Feed your Green Iguana daily with a fresh mix of dark leafy greens, vegetables, and a little fruit. Furry Diary's starting plan is to offer food every day, and you can adjust portions based on your iguana's age and appetite. For exact amounts, check the food label and ask your vet.21 Furry Diary plan

What does a Green Iguana eat, and what should it never eat?

Your Green Iguana is a strict herbivore: about 60% dark leafy greens like collards and dandelion, 30% vegetables like squash and peppers, and 10% fruit, all offered daily with a supplement. Never feed it animal protein, insects, or high-oxalate greens like spinach, as these can cause health issues. Always dust food with calcium and vitamins as your vet recommends.21 Furry Diary plan

How much space does a Green Iguana need?

An adult Green Iguana needs a very large enclosure, at least about 3 x 1.5 x 1.8 meters (10 x 5 x 6 feet), and bigger is better. Juveniles can start in a 120 x 60 x 120 cm space, but they grow fast. This arboreal lizard also enjoys supervised free-roam time outside the enclosure for exercise.21

What temperature, light or water does a Green Iguana need?

Provide a basking surface around 50°C (120°F), with air temperatures of 24-31°C and nights at 23-28°C. Humidity should be 60-80% by day and up to 100% at night, so mist twice daily or use an automatic system. Strong UVB and bright lighting for 12-13 hours daily are essential, and change the UVB bulb every 6 months as the maker advises.2 Furry Diary plan

How often should I clean a Green Iguana's home?

Spot-clean the enclosure daily to remove waste and uneaten food. Furry Diary's starting plan suggests a full clean and substrate change about once a month, though you may need to adjust based on your setup. Always keep fresh water available and change it daily.2 Furry Diary plan

Can a Green Iguana live with others?

Green Iguanas can live alone or in groups if the enclosure is large enough, but adult males should never share space as they become territorial. For a harmonious group, scale up the habitat significantly and monitor for any aggression. A single iguana often bonds well with its owner.2

How long does a Green Iguana live?

With proper care, a Green Iguana can live 15 to 20 years, so it's a long-term commitment. This lifespan depends on good diet, habitat, and regular vet check-ups with an exotic-pet vet. Enjoy many years with your intelligent companion.2

Can I handle a Green Iguana?

Yes, but it takes months of patient, gentle handling to build trust. Always support the body from below and avoid sudden moves, as males can become more territorial during breeding season. Handling is a daily, ongoing process that can lead to a genuinely affectionate bond.2
