The Gulf Coast box turtle has a domed, elongated shell that is dark brown to black, often marked with faint yellow dots or streaks. The plastron (underside) is dark brown or black, sometimes with blurred markings. Males may have white patches on the head. The skin is grey with darker or colourful markings, and males tend to be more brightly coloured. The rear marginal scutes flare outward in mature adults.123
Gulf Coast box turtles are intelligent and can become quite responsive to their keepers. They are generally gregarious and can be kept in pairs or groups as long as there are more females than males. Males can be territorial and may fight by biting and trying to flip each other over. They are secretive by nature, hiding in scrapes or burrows, and tend to feed at dawn or dusk.13
Daily activity how busy a day looks
Low to moderate. They are not highly active but need space to roam and explore. Outdoor pens with areas of sunlight and shade are ideal. They enjoy soaking in water and will defecate in water, so a clean water source is essential.43
Grooming and care the hands-on bits
Minimal grooming. Provide a large water bowl for soaking and drinking. The enclosure should have a substrate of leaf litter or composted hay to maintain humidity. UV lighting is not recommended because their sensitive skin and hiding behaviour make dietary vitamin D a better option. Do not clip the long, curled rear claws of males.43
Home where they are happiest
Best kept in a large outdoor pen with areas of direct morning sun and dappled light later. The substrate should be leaf litter or composted hay. A shallow water source for soaking is essential. Indoor enclosures should be as large as possible; a 50-gallon storage container is a minimum. Aquariums are unsuitable. Provide a hide box and ensure good ventilation.43
Food basics what goes in the bowl
Omnivorous. In the wild they eat earthworms, snails, slugs, insects, berries, roots, flowers, fungi, fish, frogs, and carrion. In captivity a balanced diet can include lean minced meat, banana, vegetables (broccoli, carrots) and mushrooms, plus live food like worms and crickets as treats.23
Company who they like around
They are gregarious and can live in groups with a female-heavy ratio. Males are territorial and may fight. They are not venomous or illegal to keep in most places, but check local regulations as they are a native species in some US states.13
The story where it all began
The Gulf Coast box turtle is a subspecies of the common box turtle, recognised for its large size. It is thought to have inherited its size from the extinct giant box turtle (Terrapene putnami) that lived along the Gulf coast during the late Pleistocene. Some genetic studies suggest it may not be a fully distinct lineage but rather a result of mixing between eastern box turtles and the extinct giant form. It has been kept in captivity for many years and is valued for its intelligence and interactive nature.156

Dandelion and clover are safe, nutritious weeds that tortoises love. Dandelion provides calcium and vitamins, while clover adds variety. Feed only young, fresh leaves and as part of a wider diet.
You need
A handful of fresh dandelion leaves and flowers
A handful of fresh clover leaves and flowers (young, undamaged)
How
Wash the dandelion and clover thoroughly under cool running water to remove any soil or insects.
Pat dry with a clean cloth or paper towel.
Mix the leaves and flowers together in a clean bowl.
Offer a small portion to your tortoise as a treat, ensuring the rest of the meal is varied.
How much: A small handful per tortoise, no more than once or twice a week as part of a varied diet.
Hibiscus flowers are a safe, colourful treat that many tortoises enjoy. They are low in oxalates and provide a source of hydration and natural sugars. Feed sparingly.
You need
1-2 fresh hibiscus flowers (washed)
How
Pick or purchase fresh hibiscus flowers that have not been treated with pesticides.
Rinse the flowers gently under cool water to remove any dirt or insects.
Offer the whole flower to your tortoise, or tear it into smaller pieces if needed.
How much: One or two flowers per tortoise, no more than once a week.
Not veterinary advice. Check with your vet first if your pet has allergies, a health condition, is on a special diet or is pregnant. Treats should stay a small part of the daily food. Cut to a safe size and supervise.

How often should I clean a Gulf Coast Box Turtle's home?
Spot clean daily and do a full clean monthly. Furry Diary's plan also suggests a weekly shallow lukewarm soak to help with hygiene. Always provide fresh water daily. Furry Diary plan
