Looks how to spot one
Scales
The body is covered with rough, keeled scales that give it a crocodile-like appearance. It has a broad head and several rows of spiny projections along its back, ending at the tail. The most striking feature is the bright orange or red ring around each eye, with a yellow patch in the corner.143
Personality what they are like
These skinks are shy and secretive by nature. They prefer to hide and are not fond of handling. When frightened, they may freeze, play dead, or make a barking sound. They are best enjoyed as display animals rather than pets that enjoy being held.216
Daily activity how busy a day looks
They are most active at dawn and dusk. They need plenty of hiding spots and a shallow water dish for bathing. They are not very active and spend most of their time under leaf litter or bark.21
Grooming and care the hands-on bits
They require a humid environment with plenty of hiding places. A shallow water dish should be provided. They are delicate and stress easily, so handling should be minimal. Regular health checks are fine, but too much handling can cause health issues.63
Home where they are happiest
They need a spacious terrarium with high humidity (70-90%) and temperatures around 72-78°F. The enclosure should be heavily cluttered with cork bark, driftwood, and leaf litter. A wide, shallow water dish is appreciated. They are native to tropical rainforests and are often found near water.523
Food basics what goes in the bowl
They are insectivores. In captivity, they eat crickets, mealworms, small dubia roaches, and earthworms. Feed juveniles 2-3 insects daily, and adults the same amount every other day. Feeder insects should be gut-loaded and dusted with vitamin D3.216
Company who they like around
They are solitary and shy. They do not enjoy handling and are best left alone. They can be kept in pairs or groups, but males may fight. They are not social animals and do not need companionship. They are display animals, not pets that enjoy interaction.26
The story where it all began
The red-eyed crocodile skink was first described in 1909 by Nelly de Rooij. It is endemic to New Guinea, living in tropical rainforests. It entered the pet trade in 1994 and has become increasingly popular. However, many wild-caught individuals are exported from Indonesia, and there are concerns about smuggling from Papua New Guinea. Captive breeding is possible but slow, as females do not lay eggs until they are four or five years old.12
