Keeled scales
This python has a slender, muscular body with a triangular head that is clearly distinct from the neck. Its most unusual feature is the keeled scales, which give the skin a rough, sandpaper-like texture. The body colour is light honey-tan with darker reddish-brown blotches, or dark brown with pale brown blotches; the blotches become larger towards the tail, making the pattern appear reversed. The belly is white, sometimes with black spots. The wrinkled scales help the snake grip sandstone and crevices when climbing.12
Personality what they are like
Rough-scaled pythons are known for being very docile and rarely attempt to bite. They are crepuscular, meaning they are most active at dawn and dusk. In captivity they are sedentary and spend much of their time coiled in ambush positions.14
Daily activity how busy a day looks
As an arboreal snake, it needs plenty of climbing opportunities with horizontal logs and sturdy branches. It is not a high-energy pet but does require space to move and thermoregulate. A large enclosure with a thermal gradient is essential.3
Grooming and care the hands-on bits
Minimal grooming is needed. Provide a clean water bowl at the cool end of the enclosure, and spot-clean the substrate regularly. A full substrate change should be done periodically. UVB lighting is not essential but a low-spectrum fluorescent globe can be used for viewing.3
Home where they are happiest
A tall, spacious terrarium is required, at least 90 cm wide, 60 cm deep and 120 cm high for a single adult, or 120 x 60 x 120 cm for a pair. Provide a hot spot of 32°C ground temperature, a warm end ambient temperature of 36°C, and a cool end of 25°C. Use heat tiles, mats or cords, plus an infrared heat globe for ambient warmth. Include hide caves, a water bowl, artificial plants, and climbing logs or vines. Substrate can be wood chips such as Chipsi or Critter Crumble. This species is not venomous and is legal to keep in Australia with appropriate permits, but check local regulations as it is a protected species with a very small wild distribution.31
Food basics what goes in the bowl
In captivity, feed frozen-thawed mice, rats or chicks of appropriate size. Adults typically eat one or two items every 7 to 10 days. Hatchlings may prefer anuran or avian-scented prey, suggesting frogs are important in the wild. Always feed dead prey to avoid injury to the snake.34
Company who they like around
Rough-scaled pythons are solitary and do not require company. They can be housed alone or, with enough space, a pair may be kept together. They are not venomous and are legal to keep in many places, but because they are a protected species with a tiny wild range, some countries or states may require permits or prohibit private ownership. Always check local wildlife laws before acquiring one.13
The story where it all began
The rough-scaled python was first described scientifically in the 20th century and for many years was one of the least known python species, with only two wild sightings recorded before recent field studies. It is endemic to a tiny area of monsoon rainforest and sandstone gorges in the Kimberley region of north-western Australia. In the early 2000s, a few wild-caught specimens were brought into captivity, where they bred readily. Today, most captive animals descend from those original founders. The species has become more popular in the pet trade due to its manageable size, docile nature and unique keeled scales, though it remains rare in private collections compared to other pythons.412

Owner questions the things everyone asks
How often should I feed my Rough-scaled Python?
Adults typically eat one or two frozen-thawed mice, rats or chicks every 7 to 10 days. Hatchlings may prefer anuran or avian-scented prey. Always feed dead prey to avoid injury.34
What does a Rough-scaled Python eat, and what should it never eat?
In captivity, feed frozen-thawed mice, rats or chicks of appropriate size. Never feed live prey, as it can injure the snake.34
How much space does a Rough-scaled Python need?
A single adult needs a tall terrarium at least 90 cm wide, 60 cm deep and 120 cm high. For a pair, use 120 x 60 x 120 cm. Provide climbing logs and branches.3
What temperature, light or water does a Rough-scaled Python need?
Provide a hot spot of 32°C ground temperature, a warm end ambient of 36°C, and a cool end of 25°C. Use heat tiles, mats or cords, plus an infrared heat globe. UVB is not essential. Always have a clean water bowl at the cool end.3
How often should I clean a Rough-scaled Python's home?
Spot-clean the substrate every 2 days and do a full substrate change monthly. Furry Diary's starting plan includes a full clean every 30 days.3 Furry Diary plan
Can a Rough-scaled Python live with others?
They are solitary and do not require company. With enough space, a pair may be kept together. Always check local wildlife laws as they are a protected species.13
How long does a Rough-scaled Python live?
Lifespan varies; consult a good breeder or exotic-pet vet for specific information. Regular vet check-ups help ensure a long, healthy life.
Can I handle a Rough-scaled Python?
Yes, they are very docile and rarely bite. Handle gently and support their body. They are crepuscular, so handling during dawn or dusk may be best.14
