Looks how to spot one

Scales

This gecko has a flattened, leaf-shaped tail that looks like a dead leaf with missing pieces and decay marks. Its body is laterally compressed, and its large eyes have vertical pupils with horn-like pointy scales above each eye. The skin is mottled and textured to resemble bark or dead foliage.1

Personality what they are like

Satanic leaf-tailed geckos are shy and secretive. They rely on camouflage and freezing in place rather than aggression. Bites are very rare and only a pinch if they happen. They are best left alone and should not be handled except when absolutely necessary.52

Daily activity how busy a day looks

Nocturnal and arboreal. They need plenty of thin branches and foliage to climb and hide among. They are not active during the day and require a quiet environment with minimal disturbance.1

Grooming and care the hands-on bits

Minimal grooming needed. They shed their skin periodically, which should come off in one piece if humidity is adequate. Spot clean the enclosure regularly. Provide a water dish and mist to maintain humidity.4

Home where they are happiest

Requires a tall glass or hybrid vivarium with good ventilation, at least 45x45x60 cm for a single adult. Use crushed bark or paper substrate with a moist chamber. Provide thin horizontal and vertical branches, live plants, and a water dish. Daytime temperature 24-25°C, night 19-21°C, with a winter rest period at 16-19°C. Humidity 65-100%. UVB lighting is beneficial during breeding season. This species is listed on CITES Appendix II; wild caught exports are strictly controlled, but captive bred individuals are available.45

Food basics what goes in the bowl

Strictly insectivorous. Feed small crickets, roaches, black soldier flies, and occasional soft-shelled snails. Offer 2-3 insects per feeding 1-2 times a week. All insects should be gut-loaded and dusted with calcium and multivitamin supplements every other feeding. Never use wild-caught insects.4

Company who they like around

Best kept individually. Although males can sometimes be housed together with low aggression, cohabitation causes stress and is not recommended. Pairs may be kept temporarily for breeding but should be separated otherwise. They do not form social bonds.56

The story where it all began

The satanic leaf-tailed gecko was first described by Boulenger in 1888. Its scientific name 'phantasticus' refers to its fantastic, leaf-like appearance. It is endemic to the eastern rainforests of Madagascar. In the pet trade it has become moderately popular due to its unique camouflage and small size, though it requires cool, humid conditions that can be challenging to maintain. Captive breeding is now well established, reducing pressure on wild populations.71

Owner questions the things everyone asks

How often should I feed my Satanic Leaf-tailed Gecko?

Feed your gecko 1 to 2 times a week, offering 2 to 3 small insects per feeding. This schedule keeps them healthy and mimics their natural eating habits. Always adjust based on your gecko's age and appetite, and check with your vet if unsure.4 Furry Diary plan

What does a Satanic Leaf-tailed Gecko eat, and what should it never eat?

Your gecko is strictly insectivorous and enjoys small crickets, roaches, black soldier flies, and occasional soft-shelled snails. Never feed wild-caught insects as they may carry pesticides or parasites. All feeder insects should be gut-loaded and dusted with calcium and multivitamin supplements every other feeding.4

How much space does a Satanic Leaf-tailed Gecko need?

A single adult needs a tall vivarium at least 45x45x60 cm with good ventilation. Provide plenty of thin branches and foliage for climbing and hiding, as they are arboreal and shy. A larger enclosure is always welcome for enrichment.41

What temperature, light or water does a Satanic Leaf-tailed Gecko need?

Keep daytime temperatures around 24 to 25°C, dropping to 19 to 21°C at night, with a winter rest period at 16 to 19°C. Humidity should be high, between 65 and 100%, maintained by misting and a water dish. UVB lighting is beneficial during breeding season, and always provide fresh water daily.4 Furry Diary plan

How often should I clean a Satanic Leaf-tailed Gecko's home?

Spot clean the enclosure daily to remove waste and uneaten food. A full clean, including substrate change and thorough wipe-down, is recommended once a month. This keeps the habitat fresh and your gecko healthy.4 Furry Diary plan

Can a Satanic Leaf-tailed Gecko live with others?

These geckos are best kept individually as cohabitation causes stress. Males can sometimes be housed together with low aggression, but it is not recommended. Pairs may be kept temporarily for breeding, but should be separated otherwise.56

How long does a Satanic Leaf-tailed Gecko live?

With proper care, these fascinating geckos can live between 10 and 15 years. Providing a stable environment and a good diet will help them reach their full lifespan.1

Can I handle a Satanic Leaf-tailed Gecko?

Handling is not recommended except when absolutely necessary, as they are shy and rely on camouflage. They rarely bite, but being handled causes them stress. Enjoy watching them from a distance in their beautifully set-up vivarium.52
