Looks how to spot one
scales
A slender, long-bodied colubrid with smooth scales. The ground colour is yellowish-brown to olive, becoming darker towards the tail. Along the back there are paired round black blotches that merge into bold black stripes on the tail. A distinctive dark stripe runs from the rear of each eye to the corner of the mouth, and the upper labial scales are pale cream.56
Personality what they are like
Taiwan Beauty Snakes are inquisitive and intelligent. They are not typically nervous; with regular gentle handling they become calm and will anchor themselves on the handler while exploring. They can be flighty at first but settle down well. When frightened they may waggle their tail or flatten their body to appear larger.56
Daily activity how busy a day looks
They are cathemeral (active at random times day or night) and very active. They need plenty of climbing opportunities and a large enclosure to move around. A regular day/night light cycle matching the outdoors is recommended.53
Grooming and care the hands-on bits
Minimal grooming; ensure clean water is always available and the enclosure is kept clean. Shedding requires adequate humidity. Handle two to three times a week to maintain tameness.5
Home where they are happiest
A large, tall vivarium is essential, minimum 100 gallons (approx. 180 x 60 x 60 cm) for an adult, ideally 180 gallons. Provide sturdy branches for climbing, multiple hides, and a substrate that retains some humidity. Daytime temperature 28-30°C, night-time drop to around 20°C. A basking spot of 32-35°C is beneficial. A ceramic heating element or similar can be used. For breeding, a three-month dormancy period at 10-15°C with no food is sometimes given.54
Food basics what goes in the bowl
Feed on appropriately sized frozen-thawed rodents (mice or rats). Juveniles may take lizards or tree frogs in the wild but adapt well to rodents in captivity. Offer smaller prey items more frequently rather than one large meal. Feed in a separate container to avoid association with the enclosure opening.53
Company who they like around
Solitary by nature; house individually. They are not venomous and are legal to keep as pets in most countries, but always check local regulations. Wild-caught specimens may be defensive; captive-bred individuals are generally more docile.65
The story where it all began
The Taiwan Beauty Snake is a subspecies of the Beauty Rat Snake (Elaphe taeniura), described by Werner in 1928. It is the largest of the recognised subspecies. What makes this variety distinct from the plain species is its restricted range (Taiwan), its larger adult size, and its tail pattern where the black blotches merge into bold stripes. It has been kept in captivity for decades; early captive breeding in the 1990s used wild-caught stock. It remains popular in the pet trade, especially captive-bred individuals which are more docile than wild-caught ones.764
