A large water area is essential. Substrate should be kept damp. Provide hiding spots and secure lid (they are escape artists).17

In the wild they eat frogs, tadpoles, salamanders and small fish. In captivity they can be fed small feeder fish (guppies, rosy reds), pre-killed or frozen-thawed amphibian prey, or fish-scented rodent strips. Variety is important. Avoid overfeeding fish due to thiaminase concerns.12

Solitary housing is recommended. They do not benefit from cohabitation, which can cause feeding competition and disease risk. They are not venomous and are harmless to people. In some parts of Canada they are protected; check local laws before keeping.15

The eastern ribbon snake has been kept in captivity for decades, though it is less common than the closely related garter snake. It was once considered a subspecies of Thamnophis sauritus but is now recognised as a full species, Thamnophis saurita. Its slender build and striking stripes have always appealed to collectors, but its nervous temperament and specific semi-aquatic needs mean it is usually recommended for intermediate keepers rather than beginners.41
