Looks how to spot one

Woolly, thick coat

Guanacos have a soft, woolly coat that is usually light brown, brownish yellow, or rusty red on the back and sides, with white on the belly, rump, and backs of the legs. The head, ears, and nape of the neck are grey. This colouring helps them blend into dry grassland and desert habitats.3

Personality what they are like

Guanacos are generally calm and curious animals. They are social and live in small bands led by a male. They are alert and will give an alarm call and flee if they sense danger. They are not aggressive but should be treated with respect, especially during handling.14

Daily activity how busy a day looks

Guanacos are active during the day and spend much of their time grazing and browsing. They need plenty of space to roam and forage. They are not suitable for small gardens or indoor living; they require large, secure pastures.43

Grooming and care the hands-on bits

Guanacos do not require shearing like domestic alpacas, but they do need routine hoof care and dental checks. They need access to shelter from extreme weather and clean water. Their coat naturally sheds, but occasional brushing may help remove loose hair.35

Home where they are happiest

Guanacos live in cold or temperate open areas such as shrub-steppe, semi-arid brushlands, and even wet coastal rainforests. They need large, well-drained pastures with secure fencing and a three-sided shelter for protection from rain and wind. They are not house pets and require a rural or semi-rural setting.45

Food basics what goes in the bowl

Guanacos are herbivores and mainly graze on grasses, but they also browse on shrubs, herbs, lichens, fungi, cacti, and flowers. They have a three-chambered stomach and can digest tough, low-quality plants. They can get most of their moisture from food and may not need to drink daily.23

Company who they like around

Guanacos are social herd animals and live in small bands of females led by a male. They should not be kept alone; they need at least one companion. They communicate through humming and body posture. They are generally gentle but need calm handling.15

The story where it all began

The guanaco is the wild ancestor of the domestic llama. It has been domesticated for thousands of years, with domestication beginning around 4,000 to 3,500 BC in the Andean highlands. Guanacos are still found in the wild across South America, but they are also kept as livestock for their wool and as pack animals. They are not typically kept as house pets but as farm or ranch animals.41

Owner questions the things everyone asks

How often should I feed my Guanaco, and what should it eat?

Guanacos are herbivores that graze on grasses and browse on shrubs and other plants. Furry Diary's starting plan is to provide fresh food and water daily, but they can get moisture from their food. Offer good-quality hay and pasture, and consult your vet for specific amounts based on your animal's size and activity.23 Furry Diary plan

Which foods and plants are dangerous for a Guanaco?

Many common foods can be harmful to guanacos, including chocolate, caffeine, grapes, raisins, onions, garlic, and avocado. Always avoid these and any toxic plants in their pasture. For a complete list, ask your exotic-pet vet or refer to general pet safety guides.6

How much space and land does a Guanaco need?

Guanacos need large, well-drained pastures with secure fencing to roam and forage. They are not suitable for small gardens or indoor living; a rural or semi-rural setting is best. Provide plenty of space for their active daytime grazing.435

What kind of shelter does a Guanaco need?

A three-sided shelter is essential to protect your guanaco from rain and wind. They need access to clean water and a safe, dry area during extreme weather. Ensure the shelter is well-ventilated and spacious enough for them to move comfortably.45

How do I look after a Guanaco's hooves or feet?

Guanacos need routine hoof care to prevent overgrowth and discomfort. Furry Diary's starting plan suggests trimming their toenails every 60 days. Have a vet or experienced farrier show you the proper technique.35 Furry Diary plan

Does a Guanaco need grooming or shearing?

Guanacos do not require shearing like domestic alpacas; their coat naturally sheds. Occasional brushing can help remove loose hair. Focus on hoof care and dental checks instead.35

Can a Guanaco live alone?

Guanacos are social herd animals and should never be kept alone. They need at least one companion, ideally a small band. Furry Diary's plan recommends daily company with at least two animals.15 Furry Diary plan

How long does a Guanaco live?

Guanacos can live between 15 and 28 years with proper care. Their lifespan depends on diet, environment, and veterinary care. Provide a safe, enriching habitat to help them thrive.23

Is a Guanaco good with children?

Guanacos are generally calm and curious, but they need respectful handling. They can be good with children if supervised and approached gently. Always teach children to move slowly and avoid sudden movements.14

What regular vet care does a Guanaco need?

Regular veterinary check-ups are important for guanacos, including dental exams and hoof care. Find an exotic-pet vet experienced with camelids. Furry Diary's plan also includes daily fresh food and water and regular cleaning of their area.35 Furry Diary plan
