At a glance the quick version
Snout, vent length; females reach 8-9 cm, males about 6-8 cm.
Looks how to spot one
Skin
The skin is rough and bumpy, mottled in green, brown and black with occasional red patches, giving it the look of a clump of moss. The belly is soft and smooth. They have large sticky toe pads for climbing.123
Personality what they are like
Mossy frogs are shy and secretive. Their main defence is to stay still and blend in, or curl into a ball and play dead. They are nocturnal and spend most of the day hidden. They are not a hands-on pet; handling causes stress and should be avoided. They are best enjoyed as a look-don't-touch species.14
Daily activity how busy a day looks
Low activity; they are nocturnal and spend much of the day motionless. They need a large vertical vivarium with climbing branches, cork bark and a substantial water area. They do not require UV lighting and prefer low light levels.43
Grooming and care the hands-on bits
Minimal grooming. The enclosure must be kept very clean, with weekly partial water changes and a good filtration system for the water feature. The skin is delicate and permeable, so hands must be clean, wet and free of soap or lotion if handling is ever necessary.45
Home where they are happiest
A tall glass terrarium (minimum 45x45x60 cm for a pair) with a large water area (at least one third of the floor), plenty of hiding spots, moss, cork bark and climbing branches. Temperature should be 15-24°C, never above 26°C. Humidity must stay above 80%. A cool, well-ventilated setup is essential; this species does not tolerate tropical heat.643
Food basics what goes in the bowl
Carnivorous; eats live insects such as crickets, cockroaches, earthworms, locusts and waxworm moths. Food should be gut-loaded and dusted with calcium and multivitamin powder. Adults are fed every 2-3 days.124
Company who they like around
Can be kept in small same-species groups (3-4 adults in a 45x45x60 cm enclosure) if enough space and hiding spots are provided. They are not strongly territorial, but overcrowding causes stress. They are protected in Vietnam and their habitat is threatened; wild collection may be restricted. Check local laws before acquiring.42
The story where it all began
The mossy frog has been known to science since the early 20th century, but only became popular in the pet trade in recent decades thanks to its incredible camouflage. It is now bred in captivity, though breeding remains challenging because keepers must simulate distinct wet and dry seasons. Its popularity has grown among advanced amphibian keepers who enjoy building naturalistic vivariums.14

Owner questions the things everyone asks
How often should I feed my Mossy Frog?
Adult Mossy Frogs are fed every 2 to 3 days. Young frogs may need more frequent meals, so check with your vet. Furry Diary's starting plan notes that feeding frequency depends on the species and age.124 Furry Diary plan
What does a Mossy Frog eat, and what should it never eat?
Mossy Frogs are carnivorous and eat live insects like crickets, cockroaches, earthworms, locusts, and waxworm moths. Always gut-load and dust food with calcium and multivitamin powder. Avoid feeding anything that isn't a live insect, and never give wild-caught insects that may carry pesticides; ask your vet for a complete safe list.124
How much space does a Mossy Frog need?
A pair of Mossy Frogs needs a tall glass terrarium at least 45x45x60 cm. More space is better, especially if you plan to keep a small group, and the enclosure should have plenty of climbing branches and hiding spots.643
What temperature, light or water does a Mossy Frog need?
Keep the temperature between 15 and 24°C, never above 26°C. Humidity must stay above 80%, and they need a large water area (at least one third of the floor). They prefer low light levels and do not require UV lighting.643
How often should I clean a Mossy Frog's home?
Spot clean every couple of days, do a partial water change weekly, and perform a full clean monthly. Furry Diary's starting plan suggests spot cleaning every 2 days and a full clean every 30 days.45 Furry Diary plan
Can a Mossy Frog live with others?
Yes, Mossy Frogs can be kept in small same-species groups of 3 to 4 adults in a 45x45x60 cm enclosure if there are enough hiding spots. They are not strongly territorial, but overcrowding causes stress.42
How long does a Mossy Frog live?
With proper care, Mossy Frogs can live 10 to 20 years. That's a long commitment, so be prepared to provide a stable environment for many years.124
Can I handle a Mossy Frog?
Handling is not recommended because it causes stress and their skin is delicate. They are best enjoyed as a look-don't-touch species. If you must handle, make sure your hands are clean, wet, and free of soap or lotion.14
