Looks how to spot one

Feathers

Ayam Cemani are medium sized, elegant birds with a slim, athletic build and an upright, game like stance. Their feathers are lustrous and iridescent black, and they carry a single comb with five distinct points. The body is firm but not bulky, giving a sleek, streamlined appearance reminiscent of wild red junglefowl.134

Personality what they are like

Ayam Cemani are generally calm and gentle birds. Hens are quiet and friendly, while roosters are protective of their flock. They are sociable with other chickens, other livestock and humans, and are not aggressive. Young roosters may show typical dominance behaviour. They can be somewhat skittish, so gentle handling is recommended.12

Daily activity how busy a day looks

These active, athletic birds need plenty of space to roam and forage. They are best kept in a large, secure run or free range environment where they can exercise and express natural behaviours. They are not suited to confinement in small coops.32

Grooming and care the hands-on bits

Basic chicken care applies: provide a clean, dry coop with perches and nesting boxes. In cold climates, protect the comb from frostbite. Regular health checks and good hygiene are important to prevent disease. They are heat tolerant but need shade and fresh water in hot weather.25

Home where they are happiest

Ayam Cemani thrive in warm climates but can adapt to cooler areas if provided with a warm, dry shelter. They need a secure coop to protect from predators and weather. Good ventilation is essential. They are not suited to wet or damp conditions. In some countries, keeping poultry may be regulated; check local laws before acquiring them.2

Food basics what goes in the bowl

Feed a balanced poultry ration with about 18.8% protein for laying hens. Supplement with grit to aid digestion and crushed oyster shell for strong eggshells. They enjoy treats like papaya, taro, dried soldier fly larvae and other insects. Fresh water must always be available.2

Company who they like around

Ayam Cemani are sociable and do best in small flocks with a good ratio of hens to roosters. They get along with other chicken breeds and even other livestock. Roosters can be protective, so avoid overcrowding. They are not aggressive but may show typical pecking order behaviour. In some cultures they are used in rituals; keepers should ensure ethical, welfare friendly practices.25

The story where it all began

The Ayam Cemani is an ancient Indonesian breed from Java, possibly dating back to the 12th century. It was traditionally used in religious and mystical ceremonies, and its all black appearance made it highly prized. The breed was first recorded by a Dutch colonist in the 1920s. It reached Europe in the 1990s and the United States in 2014. Today it is kept worldwide as an ornamental breed, valued for its striking black colour caused by fibromelanosis, a genetic condition that makes the skin, bones and even internal organs black. The breed remains rare, with fewer than 3500 birds reported worldwide.126
