Looks how to spot one

Feathers

A true bantam with a compact, low-set body, a full beard and muff that form a continuous line from the eyes over the earlobes, a wide tail held high, and extreme foot feathering with well-developed vulture hocks. The small or nearly absent wattles add to its distinctive, fluffy appearance.3

Personality what they are like

Belgian d'Uccles are calm, friendly and gentle birds. They rarely show aggression towards people and can become quite tame, often enjoying being held or sitting on a lap. Roosters may become slightly feisty during mating season but are generally not mean. They are quiet for chickens, with a high-pitched crow that is not overly loud.564

Daily activity how busy a day looks

These birds are energetic and love to forage. They need plenty of space to roam and exercise, and they are excellent flyers, so a covered run is essential to prevent escapes. Boredom can lead to fighting, so provide enough room and enrichment.576

Grooming and care the hands-on bits

Their heavily feathered feet require special attention. Keep them on short grass, soft sand or loose straw to prevent mud buildup and feather damage. Check feet regularly for dirt, manure, mites or scaly leg mites. Trim male foot feathers for successful breeding. Low perches and wide coop doors (at least 12 inches) help protect their plumage.346

Home where they are happiest

Provide a secure, covered run with plenty of space. The coop should have low perches and wide doors. Keep the run dry and well-drained, as damp conditions can damage foot feathers and cause illness. This breed is very sensitive to cold and humidity, so in northern climates a heated coop may be necessary. They should not be allowed to free-range due to their vulnerability to predators.435

Food basics what goes in the bowl

Feed a high-quality pellet feed alongside their foraging. Provide separate food and water stations if kept with larger breeds, as d'Uccles can be outcompeted. Fresh water must always be available.75

Company who they like around

Belgian d'Uccles are gentle and get along well with other calm breeds, but they can be bullied by larger, more aggressive chickens. Keep them in a flock of similar-sized bantams. The optimal breeding ratio is one male to three females. They are excellent broodies and mothers, though their foot feathers may accidentally kick eggs out of the nest.43

The story where it all began

The Belgian d'Uccle was created in the early 1900s by Michel van Gelder in Uccle, a suburb of Brussels, Belgium. He aimed to develop a booted bantam with a lower posture, more compact body and a full beard. It is believed he crossed the Dutch Sabelpoot with the Antwerp bearded bantam, though the exact details are not certain. The breed was first shown in 1905, and the Mille Fleur variety was added to the American Poultry Association's Standard of Perfection in 1914. After the world wars the breed declined, but a Belgian club was formed in 1969 to revive it. Today it remains a popular ornamental and pet bantam.23

What does a Belgian d'Uccle eat, and what should it never eat?

Feed a high-quality pellet feed and let them forage for natural treats. Never give them avocado, chocolate, caffeine, grapes, raisins, onion, garlic, or any foods from the toxic list, as these can be very dangerous for birds.758

What shelter or housing does a Belgian d'Uccle need?

Provide a coop with low perches and wide doors (at least 12 inches) to protect their plumage. The run should be covered and dry, as dampness can damage foot feathers and cause illness. In cold climates, a heated coop may be necessary.435

How often should I clean a Belgian d'Uccle's home?

Furry Diary's starting plan suggests spot-cleaning the coop daily and doing a full clean every 30 days. Also check for mites every two weeks. Keep the run dry and well-drained to prevent health issues. Furry Diary plan
