The Embden has pure white plumage, a long graceful neck, an oval head with blue eyes, and a short bright orange bill with a flesh-coloured tip. The legs and feet are orange. Young birds may show a few grey feathers on the back or rump until their first moult.135
Embden geese are generally calm and friendly, especially when raised with gentle handling. However, ganders can become territorial and protective during breeding season or when guarding a mate, nest or goslings. They are intelligent, observant birds that form strong flock bonds and will give loud alarm calls if they sense danger.45
Daily activity how busy a day looks
Embden geese need daily access to a large outdoor area where they can walk, graze, forage and bathe. They are active grazers and should not be kept in small pens or on concrete. A sedentary lifestyle leads to obesity, foot problems and poor feather condition.4
Grooming and care the hands-on bits
Provide soft, dry bedding and clean water for bathing. Check feet regularly for redness, swelling or limping. Monitor body condition, droppings and feather quality. Clean water and good pasture do more to prevent illness than any supplement.4
Home where they are happiest
Embden geese need a spacious outdoor pen with grass, shade and predator protection. A minimum of 2 square metres per bird outdoors is recommended, but larger areas work better. They also need a secure, dry shelter for night and bad weather. Bathing water deep enough for full-body washing is essential. They are not suitable for small urban gardens due to noise, mess and space requirements.46
Food basics what goes in the bowl
Grass should make up the bulk of their diet. Supplement with a balanced commercial waterfowl or game-bird ration (14-17% protein for maintenance, higher during breeding). Goslings need extra niacin. Always provide fresh water near food. Avoid bread, crackers and snack foods.45
Company who they like around
Embden geese are social and do best in a small flock rather than alone. They can be kept with other geese but may bully more docile breeds. Ganders can be protective during breeding season. They are not recommended as a quiet, low-mess companion for a small household.45
The story where it all began
The Embden is one of the oldest domestic goose breeds, with origins believed to go back to the 13th century in the East Frisia region of north-western Germany. It was developed from large white geese that were sometimes called 'swan geese' because of their long curved necks. The modern breed was refined in the late 19th century, and birds were later improved in England to be more compact. The first Embden geese arrived in Boston in 1821, where they were initially called 'Bremens' after the port of departure. Today they are the most common goose used for commercial meat production due to their fast growth and large size.15
