Looks how to spot one

feathers

A small, neat finch with a conical seed-cracking bill. The male has a green back, brownish wings and tail, bright yellow underparts and rump, and a yellow face framed by a grey crown and a thin black whisker stripe. Hens look alike but paler, and some carry a faint grey band across the throat.13

Personality what they are like

A lively, sociable finch that lives in flocks in the wild. Only the males sing, and they do it often. In an aviary, pairs bond closely and males can be territorial toward other singers or similarly coloured yellow birds, so one pair per enclosure works best.43

Daily activity how busy a day looks

An active flyer that does best with room to fly, such as a flight cage or aviary rather than a small cage.3

Grooming and care the hands-on bits

Low-maintenance bird that keeps its own plumage tidy. Birds kept outdoors need solid shelter from wind, storms and temperatures below about 10 C (50 F).3

Home where they are happiest

Can be kept in cages, flights or aviaries, with one pair (or a trio) per enclosure. Outdoor aviaries need a sheltered area for cold or stormy weather.3

Food basics what goes in the bowl

In the wild it eats grass and weed seeds, buds, flowers, leaves, nectar and small insects. In captivity a canary seed mix with greens such as cucumber, sprouted seed, soft food and some live food is typical.243

Company who they like around

Forms strong monogamous pair bonds. Keep as a pair; several pairs in one enclosure tend not to settle well.32

The story where it all began

This African finch has long been kept for its sweet song and is known in aviculture as the green singer. Birds were released in Hawaii in the 1960s and the species is now established there. DNA studies later moved it from the genus Serinus to Crithagra.41

Fun facts for the dinner table

  1. 1

It feeds by landing on tall grass stems so they bend down, bringing the seed heads within reach.4

  2. 2

Up to three pairs may build their nests in the same tree.4

  3. 3

It is a close relative of the domestic canary, and the two can produce fertile hybrids.3

  4. 4

Captive birds were released in Hawaii in the 1960s and the species now lives wild there, in parks and resort grounds.4

  5. 5

Only the hen incubates the eggs, for about 13-15 days.2

Owner questions the things everyone asks

How often should I feed my Green Singing Finch?

Offer fresh food and water every day. Furry Diary's starting plan suggests daily fresh food and water to keep your finch happy and healthy. Furry Diary plan

What does a Green Singing Finch eat, and what should it never eat?

A typical diet includes a canary seed mix, greens like cucumber, sprouted seed, soft food, and some live food. Foods that are unsafe vary by bird, so please ask your vet for a list of what to avoid.432

How much space does a Green Singing Finch need?

This active flyer does best with room to fly, so a flight cage or aviary is ideal rather than a small cage. One pair per enclosure works well, as noted in the care plan.3

What temperature, light or water does a Green Singing Finch need?

Keep your finch above 10°C (50°F) and provide solid shelter from wind and storms if outdoors. Offer a shallow dish or gentle mist for bathing every few days, as Furry Diary suggests.3 Furry Diary plan

How often should I clean a Green Singing Finch's home?

Change the cage liner every two days and do a full clean once a week. This keeps the environment fresh and healthy for your finch. Furry Diary plan

Can a Green Singing Finch live with others?

Yes, they form strong pair bonds, so keep them as a single pair. Multiple pairs in one enclosure often don't settle well, so one pair per space is best.32

How long does a Green Singing Finch live?

With good care, they typically live 8 to 10 years. Enjoy many happy years with your lively companion.3

Can I handle a Green Singing Finch?

Handling varies by individual bird; some may become tame with patience. For advice on bonding, ask a good breeder or an avian vet.
