Feathers
Males are spectacular with a long, grey-white tail barred in black, a red crest, a white-and-black cape that can be raised, a scaled green throat, dark green back, blue and brown wings, and a yellow rump. Females are much plainer, with mottled brown plumage and finer barring, similar to a female common pheasant but with a darker head and cleaner underparts.1
Personality what they are like
Lady Amherst's pheasants are naturally shy and cautious, preferring to hide when they feel threatened. With patient, gentle handling from a young age, they can become more comfortable around people. They are generally calm and non-aggressive, though males may become territorial during the breeding season.56
Daily activity how busy a day looks
These birds need a spacious, secure aviary that allows for ground foraging, short flights, and roosting in trees. They prefer to run rather than fly but can burst upwards suddenly if startled. A quiet environment with visual barriers helps them feel safe.32
Grooming and care the hands-on bits
Provide a predator-proof aviary with dry footing, sheltered roosting areas, and dense planting for cover. Keep the enclosure clean and dry to prevent stress and disease. Regular health checks with an avian vet are recommended.36
Home where they are happiest
A fully enclosed aviary with roof netting is essential as they can fly. They need dense shrubbery, bamboo thickets, or visual barriers to feel secure. Provide a mix of shaded and open areas, and ensure the enclosure is quiet and away from sudden noises. They are hardy and can be kept outdoors year-round in most parts of the UK.62
Food basics what goes in the bowl
Feed quality game bird or pheasant pellets (16-18% protein) as a base, plus grains like wheat, maize, and barley. Offer greens such as lettuce, spinach, cabbage, dandelion, and clover, along with small pieces of fruit and vegetables like apple, carrot, or berries. Provide protein supplements like mealworms or boiled egg during breeding season. In the wild they also eat bamboo shoots, spiders, and small beetles.62
Company who they like around
They are generally calm and can be kept in pairs or small groups, but males may become territorial during breeding season so provide enough space and visual cover to reduce conflict. They are shy and prefer quiet surroundings; excessive handling or sudden noises can cause stress.56
The story where it all began
Lady Amherst's pheasant is named after Sarah Amherst, who sent the first specimen to London in 1828. The species is native to southwestern China and northern Myanmar. In the UK, a feral population was established in Bedfordshire after deliberate introductions beginning in 1823, peaking at around 100-200 pairs. The last wild bird in Bedfordshire died in 2016, and the population is now considered extinct in the wild in Britain, though occasional sightings are likely escapees from private collections.71
