Looks how to spot one

feathers

A sturdy, chunky canary with a large head, very short neck, broad back and rounded chest, giving it a solid, rounded outline from every side. Its feathering is thick and full.31

ColoursBred in all canary colours3

Personality what they are like

A relaxed, less busy canary than the small breeds, which makes it a friendly and easy pet. Although it was bred for shape, many cocks still sing a strong, pleasant song.1

Daily activity how busy a day looks

Less active than smaller canaries but still needs room to fly between perches.13

Grooming and care the hands-on bits

Keeps its thick plumage tidy by preening and bathing; provide a shallow bath.3

Home where they are happiest

Canaries exercise by flying, so choose a cage that is long and wide enough for short flights between perches, or an aviary. Place it away from draughts, windows and strong direct sun, and clean the floor of the cage regularly.3

Food basics what goes in the bowl

A canary seed mix with greens, fruit and vegetables.4

Company who they like around

Can live with other canaries in an aviary outside the breeding season.3

The story where it all began

Canaries came to Norwich with Flemish and Huguenot weavers who settled in Norfolk from Elizabethan times onward, and the city became a centre of canary breeding. The Norwich was the leading show canary before 1850 and a major export by around 1900. The modern, heavier type was standardised in 1890 and looks quite different from the older birds.213
