Looks how to spot one

feathers

A slim, compact little canary that keeps the shape and proportions of its wild island ancestor, with a forked tail and smooth, close feathering. It is bred purely for its voice, so body shape is simply natural and unexaggerated.32

Personality what they are like

A lively, active small songbird that is usually happy to be watched rather than handled. Males are the main performers and fill a room with a clear, ringing song; the breed is prized for its voice more than for tameness.13

Daily activity how busy a day looks

Needs room to hop and fly between perches; a cage that is wide rather than tall suits canaries best.3

Grooming and care the hands-on bits

Offer a shallow dish of water for bathing, keep the cage floor clean and trim nails now and then when they grow long.3

Home where they are happiest

A roomy, wide cage or flight with several perches at different heights so the bird can fly short distances.3

Food basics what goes in the bowl

A canary seed mix (canary seed, millet, rapeseed, niger and similar) plus fresh greens and vegetables such as lettuce, broccoli and grated carrot, with small amounts of fruit like apple or pear.3

Company who they like around

Content kept as a single singing male; can live with other canaries in a large enough flight. Enjoys being near household activity.3

The story where it all began

Spanish fanciers built the Timbrado by pairing their best local singers with wild canaries, aiming to keep a song close to the natural wild call. The breed took its modern form in the 20th century and was accepted as an international song breed in 1962, making it the youngest of the classic song canaries.123

Fun facts for the dinner table

  1. 1

The name comes from the Spanish word for the ring of a bell, a nod to its metallic, bell-like tones.3

  2. 2

Among the song canary breeds kept in the US it is the loudest and highest-pitched, and good singers can produce a rattling sound likened to castanets.1

  3. 3

Its powerful song is delivered with the beak held open, and a classic performance is built from around 12 note types.3

  4. 4

Breeders choose birds purely on singing ability, regardless of colour, shape or size.2

Recognised by the official bits

International song canary fancy (COM)
Described by Spanish Timbrado breeders as the most recently recognised international song canary breed, recognised in 1962.2
Song canary classification
One of the main song canary breeds alongside the German Roller and Belgian Waterslager; birds are judged on song, not looks. Modern lines split into Classic (continuous, rolled passages) and Floreado (clearly separated notes) styles.3
