Spice Finch
Lonchura punctulata
Also called Scaly-breasted Munia, Nutmeg Mannikin, Nutmeg Finch, Spotted Munia, Ricebird
From Tropical Asia, from India and Sri Lanka east through Indochina and southern China to Indonesia and the Philippines. Feral flocks also live in places such as Hawaii, Puerto Rico and parts of the USA and Australia.12
At a glance the quick version
Looks how to spot one
Feathered; small munia with a thick dark seed-cracking bill
A tidy little finch dressed in warm chocolate brown on the head and back, with a yellowish-brown rump and tail. The white chest and flanks are covered in neat dark scallops, like tiny fish scales, which gives the species its name. Young birds are a plain soft brown until their first moult.214
Personality what they are like
Spice finches are calm, even-tempered and busy. They zip around rather than drift, preen their companions and settle down side by side at night. They are not demanding and rarely cause trouble with other gentle birds.243
Daily activity how busy a day looks
Strong, active fliers that enjoy swings and hanging upside down. A roomy flight or aviary with tall, reed-like perches keeps them happy; cramped cages do not suit them.243
Grooming and care the hands-on bits
Self-grooming and fond of bathing, so offer a shallow bath or gentle misting. Owners should check the claws now and then, as they can grow long and may need trimming.234
Home where they are happiest
A large, bright, well-ventilated rectangular cage or aviary. A pair does well in about 90 x 90 x 45 cm or more, with vertical perches that mimic tall grasses.432
Food basics what goes in the bowl
Small grass and millet seeds, soaked or sprouted seed, greens such as lettuce, spinach or chickweed, egg food and some small live food like mealworms. Cuttlebone supplies minerals.243
Company who they like around
A true flock bird that should live in a group or at least a pair. It gets along with its own kind and with other calm finches, and likes to roost together in nest baskets.23
The story where it all began
Carl Linnaeus described the species in 1758, first placing it with the crossbills; it was later moved to the munia genus Lonchura. Its trade name comes from the spice ships that carried these birds to Europe, which also led to feral flocks in ports along the old trade routes.14
