Coat and looks how to spot one

short, dense, close-lying ticked coat without a thick undercoat

A sturdy, muscular cat with big paws, a broad diamond-shaped head and large almond eyes. Its short, soft coat is made of banded hairs that create a warm golden-brown ticked ground over which runs a black mackerel tabby pattern. Dark lines run from the eyes down the face, the tail is ringed and ends in a black tip, and a small dark mark at the corner of the mouth makes the cat look as if it is smiling.123

Personality what they are like

The Dragon Li is bright, alert and lively with a gentle nature. It is loyal to its household and often picks a favourite person, but it is independent and usually prefers sitting near you to being held for long. It tends to watch over the other animals in the home.321

High. A natural hunter and athlete that enjoys chase toys, fetch and climbing; give daily interactive play and places to jump and explore.32

Grooming and care the hands-on bits

Low. Brush once or twice a week, trim nails and clean ears as needed, and brush teeth regularly.32

Home where they are happiest

Needs room to move and climb and appreciates enrichment such as window perches and puzzle toys; enjoys safe, supervised access to the outdoors.3

Food basics what goes in the bowl

No special requirements beyond a complete, high-quality, protein-rich cat food; active cats may need portions matched to their energy use.3

Company who they like around

Bonds strongly with its family but likes some personal space. Generally gets on with considerate children and other cats, and can accept dogs with careful introductions.23

The story where it all began

Li Hua cats have lived alongside people in China for a very long time and feature in Chinese folklore. Chinese breeders began presenting them as a pedigree breed in Beijing in the early 2000s, and CFA accepted them for its Miscellaneous class in 2010, though they left that register in 2015. The breed is still best known in its homeland.12
