The Ural Rex has a soft, wavy or curly coat that is different from other Rex mutations. The curls become fully developed only by two years of age. The coat is medium in length and lies in even waves.14
Ural Rex cats are exceptionally friendly, playful and affectionate. They have a calm and balanced nature, are very patient and never aggressive. They get along well with children and other pets, though they may see small rodents as prey. They are trusting, almost naive, and form strong bonds with their humans. They do not tolerate loneliness well and can become depressed if left alone for long periods.254
Daily activity how busy a day looks
Moderate. They are playful but not hyperactive. They enjoy interactive toys and games, and appreciate having a scratching post and a cat tree. They are not destructive and are generally quiet.54
Grooming and care the hands-on bits
Minimal grooming is needed. Brush gently once a week with a rubber mitten or suede cloth to remove loose hairs. During shedding season (spring and autumn), brush twice a week. Avoid frequent bathing as their skin is sensitive and hot air from a hairdryer can straighten the curls. Kittens benefit from more frequent brushing to help the adult coat develop.54
Home where they are happiest
They adapt well to apartment living. Provide a litter tray placed away from food bowls, a cosy bed or basket, scratching posts and toys. They need human company and should not be left alone for long hours. They are not suited to outdoor-only life as they crave human interaction.45
Food basics what goes in the bowl
Ural Rex cats have a good appetite but are not prone to obesity. They can be fed high-quality commercial cat food or a balanced natural diet. A natural diet should consist of about one third lean meat and offal, one third cooked grains (rice, buckwheat, oatmeal) and one third vegetables and fruits. Fresh water must be changed at least twice daily. Do not mix commercial and natural food in the same meal; it is better to alternate weeks. Occasional treats of boneless sea fish, egg yolk or low-fat cheese are fine. Sprouted cat grass is a good source of vitamins.34
Company who they like around
Ural Rex cats are very social and need constant human companionship. They do not tolerate being left alone for long periods and can become depressed. They are friendly with other pets and children, but their hunting instincts may be triggered by small rodents. They are generally quiet and not demanding, but they thrive on attention and affection.24
The story where it all began
The Ural Rex is a natural Russian breed that originated from a spontaneous mutation. Curly-coated cats were reported in the Ural region as early as the 1940s, but their numbers declined after the war. The modern breed was founded by a curly black bicolour tomcat named Vasiliy, born in 1988 in the city of Zarechniy, Sverdlovsk region. All registered Ural Rex cats today descend from Vasiliy and his curly offspring. The breed was first officially recognised by the World Cat Federation (WCF) in 2006, and later by MFA and FARUS in Russia. It remains rare and is mostly found in Russia and Germany.1234
Not veterinary advice. Check with your vet first if your pet has allergies, a health condition, is on a special diet or is pregnant. Treats should stay a small part of the daily food. Cut to a safe size and supervise.

All of this is free for everyone, with a source on every fact, and it will never show annoying ads. It was a big job to build, so if it helped you, buy Archy a bone. Any amount is lovely, and no is a perfectly fine answer too.
Archy is our Australian Cattle Dog and chief taste tester. Tips go to 4V3D OÜ, the small family studio behind Furry Diary.
