At a glance the quick version
FCI and UKC standards set no weight. Wikipedia gives 18-23 kg (40-50 lb) for males and 16-18 kg (35-40 lb) for females; Hill's gives a broader 23-32 kg (50-70 lb) for adults without splitting by sex.
Coat and looks how to spot one
hard, dense, wiry (broken) double coat
A crisp, wiry outer jacket lies close to the body over a shorter, softer undercoat; the best coats are straight or just slightly crinkled. The largest of the terriers, the Airedale is muscular and fairly compact, with a long flat head, small V-shaped ears and a level, upright stance.152
Personality what they are like
Outgoing, self-assured and brave without being quarrelsome. Airedales are quick-witted, full of fun and often a bit of a clown at home, yet alert and watchful enough to make good guardians. They form strong bonds with their family and are usually good-natured with children they grow up with.1546
Daily activity how busy a day looks
An energetic, working breed that needs at least an hour a day of exercise combined with mental challenges. Airedales enjoy obedience, agility, rally, scent work, tracking and swimming.346
Grooming and care the hands-on bits
Brush the wiry coat a few times a week; the Royal Kennel Club lists grooming as a daily task. Hand-stripping a few times a year keeps the proper harsh texture and tidy outline. Shedding is light. Trim nails regularly and check ears weekly.34
Home where they are happiest
Happiest in a larger home with a secure garden and plenty to do; bored Airedales will invent their own projects.34
Food basics what goes in the bowl
A complete, good-quality food made for large, active breeds, with growing puppies on a large-breed puppy formula until they mature. Portion to keep a fit, muscular shape.4
Company who they like around
A people-oriented dog that likes to be involved in family activities and bonds deeply with its household. It can be reserved and protective with strangers, so early socialisation is worthwhile.46
The story where it all began
The Airedale was developed in the mid-1800s by working people in the valley of the River Aire in Yorkshire, who wanted a bigger terrier able to hunt rats, otters and other quarry along the riverbanks and in the water. They crossed the old Black and Tan (Old English) Terrier with the Otterhound, and other terriers may also have contributed. The dogs were first known as Waterside or Bingley Terriers, and the name Airedale Terrier came into use around 1879 as show classes were offered for them. The Kennel Club recognised the breed in 1886 and the American Kennel Club followed in 1888, a few years after the first Airedales reached the USA in 1885; the Airedale Terrier Club of America was founded in 1900. Champion Master Briar (1897-1906) is regarded as a founding sire of the modern type. In the First World War Airedales carried messages, found wounded soldiers and hauled supplies for the Red Cross, and they later served with police forces in Britain, Germany and Japan. In the early 1920s the Airedale was among the most popular breeds in America, helped by owners such as Presidents Theodore Roosevelt, Warren Harding and Calvin Coolidge.27531
