Coat and looks how to spot one

short to medium, smooth to slightly wavy

A sturdy, compact little hound with a sweet expression, soft dark eyes and floppy ears that may be long and feathered like a Cavalier's. Most have the Beagle's short, smooth, dense coat, though some inherit a longer, wavy Cavalier coat.123

Personality what they are like

Happy, sociable and loyal, the Beaglier loves being part of family life and treats most people and dogs as new friends. It is playful and curious rather than a pure lap dog, and some keep a bit of the Beagle's nose-led spirit for sniffing out adventures.123

Daily activity how busy a day looks

Moderate: 30 to 60 minutes of exercise a day, such as a good walk plus active play, along with games that keep the mind busy.13

Grooming and care the hands-on bits

Easy-care for most: weekly brushing is enough for short coats, while wavy-coated dogs need more frequent brushing to stay tangle-free. Bathe only when needed, trim nails about monthly and brush teeth regularly.231

Home where they are happiest

Adapts well to apartments as well as houses with a fenced garden. Short-coated dogs may appreciate a coat in cold weather.123

Food basics what goes in the bowl

A complete food suited to its life stage and small to medium size, in measured portions, following your vet's advice on amounts.13

Company who they like around

Thrives on human company and generally gets along well with children, other dogs and cats, especially when socialised early.12

The story where it all began

Australian breeders developed the Beaglier in the 1990s. Their goal was a small, loving, sociable and playful companion combining the best of the cheerful Beagle and the gentle Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. It has grown steadily more popular as a family pet since.12
