Coat and looks how to spot one

short, smooth coat

A lean, quick, medium-sized working dog with a sleek, tight, glossy coat that lies flat to the body.12

Coloursblue (light silver to dark charcoal)red (light cream to rust)tricolour (blue base with red markings)1

Personality what they are like

An alert, intense and hard-working dog that learns new tasks fast and loves to be busy. Well-socialised Lacys are gentle with children they know, may be reserved with strangers, and young dogs can be very bouncy around small kids.12

Daily activity how busy a day looks

Very high. It needs plenty of physical and mental work every day, and dog sports such as agility, tracking and herding suit it well.21

Grooming and care the hands-on bits

Very low maintenance: an occasional brush keeps the short, glossy coat clean.2

Home where they are happiest

Happiest in a home with outdoor space to run, ideally with an active owner or a working role.2

Food basics what goes in the bowl

A complete diet suited to age and activity; adults usually get two meals a day and puppies three, with treats kept to about 10% of daily calories.2

Company who they like around

A devoted working partner that wants to be involved with its people and given a purpose.2

The story where it all began

Four Lacy brothers brought their ranch dogs from Kentucky to Texas in 1858 and bred them into an all-purpose helper for driving cattle, trailing game and catching feral hogs. The breed later became scarce, preservation work began in 1975, and in 2005 Texas named it the official State Dog Breed.12
