Coat and looks how to spot one

short, smooth coat

A lean, medium-sized dog with a jackal-like look: long, pointed, upright ears, almond eyes often rimmed in black, and a tail that curls up like a fish hook. The close coat changes with the seasons, and coarser hairs along the neck and back can rise when the dog is excited.213

Personality what they are like

Naturally reserved and cautious with strangers, it does not seek attention from people it does not know. Once it accepts someone into its circle, that wariness fades and it becomes a close, devoted companion.32

Company who they like around

Forms a strong bond with its family group and benefits from patient, early socialising.32

The story where it all began

Dogs of this type were described in the 1920s, but the breed was brought to wider attention in the 1970s by University of Georgia ecologist Dr I. Lehr Brisbin, who studied free-living dogs at the Savannah River Site. Genetic studies suggest part of their ancestry is pre-Columbian with East Asian links.12

Fun facts for the dinner table

  1. 1

Its nickname 'American Dingo' comes from its likeness to the Australian dingo.1

  2. 2

Studies estimate roughly 10-35% of its ancestry may date from before European contact.1

  3. 3

The dogs were first studied at the Savannah River Site in South Carolina, an area closed to the public since 1950.1
