three varieties: short, long, wire (rough)

Personality what they are like

Watchful, lively and devoted to its family, with a sharp mind and a streak of independence. It likes to work and learns quickly, but it thinks for itself, so consistent and engaging training brings out its best.134

Daily activity how busy a day looks

High. It was built to work all day and does best with daily physical exercise plus mental work such as herding, obedience, tracking, agility or protection sports.124

Grooming and care the hands-on bits

Short coats need a weekly brush, long coats more frequent brushing, and rough coats occasional hand-stripping of dead hair; all types have an undercoat that sheds seasonally.13

Home where they are happiest

Best with an active owner and space to move; it can adapt to different homes if its exercise and training needs are met.24

Company who they like around

Forms a close bond with its handler and family. It can be reserved with strangers, so early and ongoing socialisation is recommended.3

The story where it all began

Dutch farmers kept these all-round dogs to herd sheep, keep flocks off crops and guard the yard. When sheep farming faded around 1900, the breed moved into police work, tracking and guide work; the first standard came in 1898, and it has changed very little since.12

Fun facts for the dinner table

  1. 1

Since 1914 the breed has been limited to brindle colouring, mainly to tell it apart from German and Belgian Shepherds.2

  2. 2

A true silver brindle is considered very rare.2

  3. 3

Dogs that earn KNPV police-dog titles in the Netherlands are sought after for police and military work around the world.2

  4. 4

Apart from colour, it closely resembles the Belgian Shepherd in coat types and build.3
