At a glance the quick version
FCI standard: males 9-14 kg, females 8-13 kg. UKC gives 20-31 lb (about 9-14 kg) for males and 18-29 lb (about 8-13 kg) for females. The AKC standard sets a maximum of 28 lb (about 12.7 kg).
Coat and looks how to spot one
Short, smooth, close, glossy coat with no undercoat
A compact, sturdy little molossian with a lot of muscle packed into a small frame. It has a broad, square head with a short, snub nose and soft, even wrinkles, topped by its famous upright 'bat' ears that are wide at the base and rounded at the tips. The back rises gently towards the loin in a slight arch, and the naturally short tail is carried low. The coat is fine, soft and shiny to the touch.254
Personality what they are like
A cheerful, sociable little dog that loves its people and likes to be at the centre of family life. It is lively and fun but not wild, with a steady, balanced disposition and plenty of comic charm. Frenchies are alert and will let you know when something is happening, yet they tend to bark only occasionally. They respond well to training when it is kept upbeat and rewarding.25468
Daily activity how busy a day looks
Moderate. Short daily walks and indoor play suit the breed well, typically under 20 minutes of brisk activity per session for Hill's and up to an hour a day in total per the Royal Kennel Club. It is not a jogging partner, so keep outings relaxed and schedule them for the cooler parts of the day in warm weather.638
Grooming and care the hands-on bits
Low-maintenance coat: an occasional brush keeps it shiny, and weekly grooming is plenty. Wipe and dry the facial wrinkles and clean the ears regularly, and keep nails trimmed. Frenchies prefer mild temperatures, so provide shade, fresh water and a cool indoor space (air conditioning in hot climates) in summer. Their front-heavy build makes them weak swimmers, so always supervise them near pools and open water.863
Home where they are happiest
Very well suited to apartments and small homes in town or country; a small to medium garden is a bonus but not essential. It should live indoors with the family in a temperature-controlled home.386
Food basics what goes in the bowl
A complete, balanced dog food in modest portions; the breed does not need a lot of food. Keeping it at a lean, trim weight is important, and a vet can advise on amounts.68
Company who they like around
A true companion dog that craves attention and does best when it is not left alone for long periods. It is usually very fond of people and fits into households of all sizes, from single owners to families.684
The story where it all began
The Frenchie's story starts in England, where Bulldogs were bred down to a small 'toy' size that became a favourite lap-warmer among lace makers in Nottingham in the early 1800s. When the Industrial Revolution pushed many of those craftspeople to move to Normandy and northern France, their little bulldogs went too. Over the following decades, probably with some crossing to other short-faced breeds, a distinct French type took shape. By the late 19th century the dogs were a fixture of Paris street life, from Montmartre cafés and cabarets to fashionable salons, and they appeared in works by Toulouse-Lautrec and Degas. The first breed club formed in Paris in 1880 and the French Kennel Club recognised the breed in 1898. American society fanciers first showed Frenchies at Westminster in 1896, and a heated argument over rose ears versus bat ears led to the founding of the French Bull Dog Club of America on 5 April 1897; its standard allowed only bat ears, which became the breed's signature. In Britain, a breed club formed in 1902 and Kennel Club recognition followed. Popularity dipped after the First World War, then slowly recovered from the 1950s onwards, and in the 21st century the French Bulldog became one of the most popular dogs in the world, reaching No. 1 in the AKC rankings in 2022.93241011712
